  • Eco-conscious rural rental tents a mile from Lower Metherell
  • In the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Bike hire on site and close to walking trails and canoe trips
To Cornwall, and Callington, and a cracking country break with a conscience. For not only is The Copper Pot Campsite in a most favourable location (bordering the National Trust’s Cotehele estate and in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), it’s also been purposely set up with low-impact, eco-friendly stays in mind. It’s possible to drive, of course, but the folks here are mighty keen to encourage guests to seek alternatives, and they’ve gone all out to ensure that’s as easy as can be. For starters, if you arrive by train (at Gunnislake, 10 minutes away) they’ll happily sort transport to whisk you to the site; from then on you can hit the local walking trails or hire their bikes for two-wheeled touring. Carting heaps of caboodle around isn’t an issue either, as they’ve provided all the bits and bobs you need for a break (well, most of it – you’ll still need to provide your own pants and the like). Rental tents are already set up with beds and bedding, and there’s plenty of cooking kit to help you prep meals in the well-equipped kitchen or out at the two campfire/barbecue areas (if you’ve not toddled off to the pub 10 minutes away, that is). Other facilities are, as you’d imagine, similarly eco-conscious: the off-grid tents have LED lighting and are a short stroll from a bathroom with compost toilets and hot showers.

Liked: Really enjoyed the peaceful nature of the site. Jame (owner) is about as friendly and accommodating as they come. He has a real love for nature and it shows in his attitude and outlook.

It’s encouraged (but not mandatory) for communal eating (round the fire pit) and we stayed 12 nights and would say 8-9 of those were had there in great company with other guests which generated a wonderful shared experience.

Kids (7 year old twins) loved the whole experience and we have already booked a return visit in May. We like our creature comforts but it was worth the compromise to feel like you were a kid again and were camping in the woods, great family break.

Route directions

The site is keen to encourage travel by public transport, but if you’re driving please follow the instructions below rather than satnavs. From Plymouth, follow the signs to Cotehele. Instead of turning right going over the bridge to Cotehele Quay, continue on the road towards Harrowbarrow. Turn right just before the Harrowbarrow sign and continue along this road until you get to the site on the right. From Tavistock, take the A390 past Gunnislake, then take the left turn signposted for Metherell. In Metherell, take the left into Lower Metherell at the Cross House Inn, then follow the road round to a T-junction. Take the left turning and look out for the site on the right.

Local attractions

Kick off your local wanderings with an outing to the Cotehele estate: it’ll take you half an hour or so to walk over to the Tudor house to see the collections amassed by the Edgecumbe family over 600 years (including a giant pair of whale jawbones) and meander through the gardens and woodland paths. Trot back via Cotehele Mill to sample cakes and biscuits created from flour freshly ground with power from the Victorian waterwheel. That cake isn’t just for fun – it’ll also provide essential fuel for guided canoe trips on the Tamar river from Cotehele Quay (an excellent excuse for a second biscuit), or a trip to the Tamar Trails Centre, five miles away, to walk the trails, career along the mountain bike tracks or pick your way along the treetop courses. Biking types can also take the 20-minute pedal to the Drakes Trail for a traffic-free run all the way to Plymouth. If you have brought a car, it’ll take half an hour or to so get to Plymouth (to visit the aquarium, take a dip in the lido or sample the local gin), 15 minutes to the maize maze at Smeaton’s Farm or 50 minutes to the Eden Project’s famed plant-filled domes.
