  • Quiet and friendly family site on a farm four miles from Bodmin
  • Five miles from the Eden Project and 30 minutes' drive from the coast
  • Within easy reach of the Camel Trail cycle route and other bike paths
No bright lights, no noisy clubhouse and no rigid rules… just peace, quiet and a mightily friendly vibe in a stargazing and cycling haven close to Bodmin and the Eden Project – sound just splendid? Then pitch yourself up at Mena Farm. Run by Ali and Neil, Mena is a family-friendly farm site in central Cornwall, five miles from Bodmin and the Eden Project and eight from St Austell. This is cracking cycling country, with several bike routes running from or near the site and the 18 scenic miles of the family-friendly Camel Trail reachable at Bodmin. Going beachwards, Fowey on the south coast and Newquay on the north are both within half an hour's drive. For days on site, ramble your way over to the wilder corners of Mena for den building and wildlife spotting (species to spy include badgers, rabbits, deer and buzzards), or trundle along to meet the pigs and chickens; egg collecting assistance is most welcome. By night, the combo of clear skies and lack of blazing lights on the park means there's some stellar stargazing to be had. Barbecues and campfires are – of course – allowed at this laidback place, so you can add sausages (and cider?) to your astronomical exploits. Ali and Neil have added a play area and a barn with games, books and a TV to further aid idling, and the mini market sells a good range of essentials to sort supplies without stirring from the grounds; you can also – how fab – get fish and chips delivered right to your pitch.

Liked: Privacy on our pitch and really quiet.

Disliked: Only one shower open.
Communal showers and toilets.

From the manager: Hi Mark - thank you for your kind review. Apologies for the limited shower availability but as we explained on your arrival, we’ve had a huge water leak which means we’re having to refurbish our facilities. I’m afraid that winter is the only time we can undertake this work. We do advertise that our facilities are unisex - we appreciate this isn’t to everyone’s liking, but all the cubicles are fully secure and private, and it works much better for families at bath-time. We’re glad to hear that you’re planning to visit us again, and we’ll look forward to welcoming you back. With kindest regards, Ali & Neil

Electric grass pitch

Liked: * clean facility.

Disliked: *toilets together not so good for kids
*Silent after 10pm , we agreed its nice to have peace quiet after 10pm
but not to be request rued to stop conversation inside a own tent and tell my friends to leave NOW go to you tent ,
also my son being stop in the play area to get off and go to his tent its a bit customer services manner its missing there
I don't think is a polite way to treat you customers and if the noise interfere come and talk nice and polite
*pitch its ok size depend on if you know someone in the place so you will be locate in a large pitch as we have big tent and have to place in angle to suit the camping regs

From the manager: Hi Juarez - you booked two pitches to stay for 3 x nights over the bank holiday weekend so the site was full. The first night I received three complaints about the noise you were making after 10pm. I had to get out of bed to ask you to be quiet. You and the rest of your party were congregating in an event shelter and having a group sing-song at 11pm, and so yes, I asked you all to disperse. It was disappointing then that I was called out to you again the following night. We are very clear that quiet time is 10pm - it is included on our site description, on your booking confirmation, your advance arrival information, during the check-in briefing and on the information sheet you are given on arrival - so it really shouldn't have been a surprise to you. We lock the games barn at that time, ask any children in the play area to go back to their families, and ask everyone to keep the noise down from this point onwards. I'm glad that you agree 10pm should be quiet time, but would have preferred that you had adhered to it like everyone else. It is our responsibility to enforce our rules, if we did not, people would no doubt pull us up on that - there are plenty of campsites where you can go and be noisy but Mena Farm isn't one of them, and people choose to come here for that reason. In regards to our pitch sizes, it was your choice to put your larger tent on the smaller of the two pitches, reserving the larger pitch for a smaller tent. It is our legal responsibility to ensure fire regs are adhered to and this did result in your tent being at an angle. The fire regs are there for yours and everyone's safety. I'm sorry you did not enjoy your camping trip here at Mena, and I hope you find a campsite you enjoy more. Regards, Alison & Neil

Local attractions

As well as the Eden Project, you may care to take a look at another top Cornwall attraction within five miles, the National Trust-managed Lanhydrock estate with its swish Victorian mansion and acres of green gardens. Within the same distance is Camel Valley Vineyard, Cornwall's biggest – yes, they do tours and yes, there is a shop. If you've brought your bike along with you, pedal the six miles or so to the Forestry Commission's Cardinham Woods for bike and mountain bike rides among the trees; bike hire is available at the centre here if you're arriving by foot or car. Get in the car or hail the local bus for your other excellent options around here, such as a potter and a seafood sample at the handsome little fishing village of Fowey, the Lost Gardens of Heligan or ziplining at Adrenaline Quarry – all within 30 to 35 minutes' drive.
