  • Almost-wild camping in a West Sussex private nature reserve
  • A 25-minute drive from the coast and close to South Downs walks
  • Dog-friendly site with fruit to pick and barbecues permitted
Pitching up in a private wildlife reserve – how does that sound? For a true ‘immersing yourselves in nature’ experience, head to Peacocks Farm Campsite. This West Sussex site is all about the wildlife, with pitches mown into the long grass but the rest left to the wildflowers and other plants. It’s a wonderful spot for some downtime in unspoiled rural surroundings. It’s a very laidback setup here – you’ll be able to wander around at your leisure and pick any suitable secluded spot for your pitch. Each one has its own character – some have walking access only and are suitable for hammocks or tents, while others have vehicle access. Kids and dogs are welcome, and you’ll be allowed to set your pitch up with camping furniture, barbecues and firepits (as long as you're careful not to scorch the surroundings). Fittingly for a nature reserve, facilities here have been kept to a minimum. You’ll have access to toilets, showers and drinking water though, and there are recycling facilities (although you will be asked to take general waste away with you). Supermarket supplies can be picked up 10 minutes’ drive away in Storrington, but pub meals and drinks are closer to home – the nearest pub is a mile away in the village of Thakeham. Feel free to forage for fruit on site as well. This is a place that’s great for some time spent simply soaking up the setting, but also one that makes a fine base for various outings. The edge of the South Downs National Park is a couple of miles away, so there are walks and bike rides galore to try out. Castles, canoeing and beach days can also be on the schedule here.

What customers say

This peaceful campsite offers private, tranquil pitches with good quality toilet and shower facilities, and a pleasant setting. However, some visitors found the site difficult to navigate with a camper van due to narrow paths and overhanging brambles. There's a perception that the site is expensive and advertising may not accurately reflect the seclusion and condition of the pitches.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked I parked the van in the car park and found a perfect place to sling up my hammock for the night. The trees were heavy with ripe plums—I literally stood and dined straight from the branches! Wildlife was everywhere I looked, adding to the tranquility of the site.
It's got a wild, natural feel, but there are plenty of well-maintained paths leading to a variety of pitch sizes. Some are only accessible on foot, but there are plenty of drive-up spots too—my VW camper had no trouble.
Before heading off, I grabbed a hot shower—great water pressure!
Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to escape into nature, even just for a night.

Disliked Nothing to dislike

From the manager: I am very glad you enjoyed it! I think you are our first hammock camper! Glad the plums went down well and I look forward to your next visit.

Liked ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — A Perfect Retreat in the Heart of Nature

Tucked away in a secluded, re-wilded corner of West Sussex, this campsite feels like stepping into a gentler, slower world. The air here hums with life — the chorus of birds at dawn, the rustle of deer in the distance, the evening’s gentle owl calls. You’re surrounded by wildflower meadows, whispering woodland, and meandering streams that catch the light in a way that makes you forget what day it is.

Pitches are generously spaced, so you get privacy. The facilities are clean but sympathetic to the environment — solar lighting, and hot showers powered by renewables. Everything here feels thoughtfully placed and low-impact, allowing the land to take centre stage.

What makes it truly special is the sense of re-wilding in action. You can hear the hum of healthy insect life along with bats, buzzard’s and a host of other bird life.

Within easy strolling distance, you’ll find a string of welcoming pubs, each with its own charm. The food is a highlight — hearty, beautifully cooked, and made with locally sourced ingredients that let you taste the region in every bite.

It’s a place where you arrive for a weekend but end up wishing you’d booked a week. Whether you’re here to hike the rolling South Downs, sit quietly with a book, or just fall asleep under a sky crammed with stars, this little pocket of West Sussex will stay with you long after you leave.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Absolutely LOVED this site!
All the information given makes it a painless arrival, park, choose a pitch and go. Facilities were clean and new, all you could ask for.
Turned up to a quiet and peaceful area, entered through a locked gate so it feels safe. Lovely natural area semi woodland and some more covered areas.
We stayed in a meadow area and had the area to ourselves as it wasn’t full.
The owner was lovely and was quite happy for us to take a look round and pick as many plumbs as we could carry 😁
This was the first time I’ve taken my two girls camping without the wife and we all had a great time!

Disliked No phone signal: not the owners fault and it’s wild camping so that’s fair enough.literally can’t think of anything bad to say about this site

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A Return to Peacocks Farm Campsite
This was my second stay at Peacocks Farm, and once again it was spot-on — a peaceful, semi-wild camping experience that stays true to its description. The site is well maintained with clear signage from the entrance, and the map makes it easy to find your way around. Mown paths lead to a great choice of secluded pitches, perfect for tents or small campers.
The facilities continue to impress — the toilets are fully functional and clean, and the IBC-cage showers are a clever and effective solution that fits the site’s rustic, eco-conscious feel. Logs are available on-site, and Paul is as welcoming and helpful as ever. He’s always happy to chat, offer tips on local places to explore, and talk about the thoughtful plans he has for the site’s future.
I noticed a negative review recently and felt it didn’t reflect the reality of this place at all. Peacocks Farm isn’t trying to be a polished holiday park — it’s a calm, back-to-nature spot for people who value space, peace, and simplicity. And it delivers exactly that.
Looking forward to returning again soon!

Disliked Reading a review that doesn’t even come close to being accurate, pitchup should remove it!

Liked Peacocks Farm Campsite is exactly as described – a semi-wild, back-to-nature experience that delivers on its promises. The map provided is accurate, and the site is well signed from the entrance through to the car parks. Pitches are easy to find by following the mown paths, which lead to a variety of optional, secluded spots perfect for tents or small campers.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This is a magical campsite with unique combination of secluded semi-wild pitches and brand new toilets and shower facilities. Lovely hot showers have great pressure. The adventure starts when you have to find a pitch , hidden amongst the wild flowers , plum and apple trees. Rabbits , frogs , butterflies , birds and deer all spotted . You can help yourself to plums , apples , damsons, blackberries from trees and bushes throughout . Absence of children leads to a very peaceful, secluded stay. Extremely friendly , responsive owner . We’ll be back soon

Disliked My only objection is by posting this review it may become too popular ! But it’s an absolute jewel of a place which should not be missed .
