Tucked away in a meadow with views to the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Joanland Field is the setting for wild camping in peaceful surroundings. Apart from the local farmer pottering past on his tractor, you’re on your own with plenty of space around each pitch. This is a truly off-grid sort of affair, with no facilities, so it’s up to you to make the most of your back-to-nature experience – but one thing’s for sure – whether you’re overnighting or planning on hanging around for a while, there’s plenty to see and do in this rural corner of West Sussex. Hikers can take jaunts along the South Downs Way, past myriad Iron Age hill forts and the Devil’s Dyke, there’s golf and fishing within a 10-minute drive of the camping field and plenty of stately piles to check out if old houses are your thing. If you’re after somewhere local to sample a few local pints, there’s a pub in Kingsfold (20 minutes’ walk) that also serves burgers or fish and chips – and there’s no need to worry about taking the car.
