Bell tents overlooking the ardingly reservoir

  • Empty bell tents on a West Sussex farm overlooking Ardingly Reservoir
  • Wakehurst and Ardingly Activity Centre 10 minutes’ drive
  • A five-minute drive to a pub and shop in Balcombe
Looking for a peaceful glamping holiday in the West Sussex countryside? Beau and Bell at Edmunds Farm, up on a hill overlooking Ardingly Reservoir (five minutes’ walk), might well be the place for you. This family- and dog-friendly site is in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so it's no surprise that it has far-reaching (and pretty spectacular) views. Accommodation is in empty five-metre bell tents sleeping up to four people, so be sure to bring along your own camping beds and bedding (and any other camping equipment) for a comfortable night's sleep. The site provides a convenient firepit and barbecue for cosy evenings. There are also toilets, hot showers, a washing-up area and ample on-site parking for vehicles (as well as wheelbarrows to help you transport your belongings to the tent). There are heaps of trails and bridleways to explore in the vicinity, starting with the one skirting the lake. Once you’ve made your way to the western shore, you can push on to Ouse Valley Viaduct, a monumental brick construction from the 19th century. If the lure of the water is too strong to resist, the Ardingly Activity Centre (10 minutes’ drive), at the southernmost tip of the reservoir, hires out paddleboards and kayaks, as well as arranging windsurfing classes. The nearest pub is in the village of Balcombe, about a mile away (five minutes by car), which also has a tea room and a small shop for provisions.

Liked: We loved everything about Bell & Beau.
It’s such an escape from normal busy everyday life.
We had the most amazing weekend, in the peace and quiet just listening to nothing but the nature and wildlife around.
The view was stunning really, picturesque.
We felt so secluded and so safe.
Would and definitely have already recommend to family and friends.
Will definitely be returning.

Local attractions

Themed areas at Wakehurst botanical gardens (10 minutes’ drive) include a swathe of American prairie-style grasslands and a grove of Australasian and South American trees. Green-fingered folk might also want to check out High Beeches Gardens (10 minutes), with seasonal highlights like springtime daffodils and vibrant red maples in the autumn. Among the World War II aircraft on display at Wings Aviation Museum (10 minutes) are RAF fighters and bombers, plus relics of a Doodlebug used by the German Luftwaffe. Period music accompanies you as you move through the exhibits, which also include a shelter from the London Blitz. If the kids are clamouring for a bouncing extravaganza, you can take them to Jumpin Fun Inflatable Park (20 minutes), where they can let rip in a vast arena with obstacle courses, giant slides and a huge bouncy airbag. Younger children, meanwhile, can explore the ball pit in the soft play area.
