  • Quiet West Sussex wild camping site near the village of East Dean
  • Goodwood Estate events 15 minutes’ drive; Chichester 25 minutes
  • In the South Downs National Park, with access to South Downs Way
Setting off for strolls in the South Downs National Park is splendidly easy from Newhouse Farm Wild Camping. This quiet and off-grid wild camping site is part of the Goodwood Estate, and it has footpaths running directly from the farm to the South Downs Way and other parts of the network of trails that run through this scenic part of the world. The farm makes a lovely place for a peaceful rural break in the West Sussex countryside, with pitches spread around the perimeter of a large field that’s got plenty of space in the middle for chilling out or playing games. There are gorgeous views of national park landscapes all around, and clusters of trees on site give a home to local wildlife. It’s a wild camping setup here, but you’ll have access to toilets (although please note no showers or hot water). Dogs and kids are welcome, and campfires and barbecues are permitted to help you cook and keep warm by night. And you may well need that warmth, as you’re likely to want to stay out as long as possible enjoying the starry displays in this International Dark Sky Reserve. The main Goodwood festival site is 15 minutes’ drive away, so this is a handy place to stay if you’re heading to an event there. Closer to home is the village of East Dean, just under two miles away, which has a good foodie pub.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: This is just the most tranquil site. Nothing but lovely views and the sounds of wildlife. Loads of space for everyone and fabulous walks on the South Downs from the campsite. Rachel is the most attentive and welcoming hostess and goes the extra to make sure everyone is happy. Facilities spotless and handy containers for ash disposal. I’m a returning customer and will be back whenever I need to reset and relax!!

Rachel the host was fantastic.
Toilets were always very clean.
Phone signal/mobile data was very good at the top of the field.
The best thing was sunset/sunrise with that view!!!!

Disliked: The field is not very flat or smooth but the view makes up for it.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite! Huge open field with big pitches per group. We had neighbours on both sides and still felt secluded as we had our own space. Rachel was very friendly, sending us plenty of info beforehand and checking on us after arrival to make sure we had everything we needed. The toilets are bare bones porta-loos but are far far cleaner than the toilet blocks at most sites so was better than expected! They are checked daily. The firepits for hire and bags of logs were reasonbly priced - I've paid a lot more for the same amount of wood! Steep but short hike up to join the South Downs Way which is a beautiful trail. Do take heed that the field is on a slope and there is a drinking water but no sink or shower facillities. There is also only mobile connection at the very top of the field. We spent a long weekend here and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We will be back!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: A wonderful isolated location. Owner was exceptionally helpful. Wild camping in the South east. Hard to imagine a better site.

Disliked: It's not for everyone. Chemical tiolets were very clean but are not good for the environment which detracts from the overall theme. I believe they are putting in compost tiolets which would be welcome.

Liked: We loved the secluded location and the surrounding woodland. It’s so nice to find a remote location, far away from the sound of traffic. The basic facilities were clean and suited us fine, although I would prefer composting toilets over port’a’loos.

Local attractions

A stay at Newhouse Farm puts you in pole position for the numerous festivals at Goodwood Estate, but the campsite is just as close to the fascinating Weald and Downland Living Museum (both 10 minutes’ drive), with its carefully restored historic farmhouses and half-timbered cottages. Chichester (25 minutes) is another cultural hotspot with a Gothic-era cathedral and events at the acclaimed Festival Theatre. Equally unmissable is the verdant West Dean Gardens (15 minutes), with its fabulous display of informal plantings, pretty waterside walks and Victorian glasshouses. There’s a stellar collection of Old Master paintings and ornate suites of rooms filled with priceless treasures at National Trust-owned Petworth House and Park, or you can step further back in time at Fishbourne Roman Palace (both 25 minutes) to see decorative mosaics in a life-size mock-up of an ancient Roman villa. If the kids want their day at the beach, choose between the sand-and-shingle expanse backed by cafés and amusement arcades at Bognor Regis or walk the dogs along the quiet sands at West Wittering (40 minutes).
