  • Stays within the National Trust's historic Polesden Lacey estate
  • Denbies Wine Estate and Chessington World of Adventures 20 mins' drive
  • Luxury bathrooms, well-stocked bar and wood-fired pizzas on site
Ever fancied spending the night at a National Trust property? Well, here’s your chance – Embers Camping - Polesden Lacey is right there within the grounds of Surrey’s Polesden Lacey estate, a grand setting indeed for your getaway. Come along for a stay here and you’ll be setting up camp within 1400 acres of fabulous gardens and countryside about an hour’s drive from London (but a world away in atmosphere). The campsite is located centrally within the estate, so it’s only a short walk away from the stately home itself – a popular spot for Edwardian high-society events in the early 20th century. Entry to the house and gardens is included in the price of your stay, so you'll be able to pop over and see the neighbours while you're here. As for your own part of the estate, it’s been nicely set up with plenty of space for family fun, including games of volleyball, football or cricket; there's also table tennis for a bit of gentle competition. Facilities have been well designed too, with showers and toilets in a sturdy oak-framed building with underfloor heating for a touch of luxury. Food and drink are an important part of any outdoor break, of course – so you’ll be pleased to hear there’s a lovely snack bar on site to provide croissants, toasties and barista coffees in the mornings, followed by ice cream, snacks and cold drinks through the day and wood-fired pizzas in the evening (look out for an email about pre-ordering). Something stronger in mind? The bar also sells local wine from Denbies, alongside draft beer and cool drinks including Pimm’s and G&T.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Shop (with pizza and beer on tap), cleanliness, staff very friendly

Disliked: No real dislikes, if I had to say something it’s a bit of a walk from the car park but it gets your steps in also no signal but was nice to be uncontactable for a couple of days 😊

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely clean campsite with great facilities. The chance to discover the grounds without the public was wonderful. Friendly staff.
Great for wildlife - Bats, Badgers, Owls and other friends!
Wheelbarrows were a very useful addition more places should use them rather than the heavy wooden trolleys. Love each pitch having a firepit.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but having to preorder the pizza 5 days before is a little inconvenient esp as we had book a day in advance. Perhaps this could be mentioned on booking and offer an alternative arrangement eg. Email to see if there is enough available. Also, please mention that your welcome gazebo isn’t manned but to look for instructions on the table would be helpful as we had missed these.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Good site, on National Trust land with access to Polesden Lacy included. Pitches around the edge of the site with lots of space for kids to play and site is vehicle free. The pitches are a little close, although wasn't full whilst we were there so it wasn't a major issue. Shower block clean enough and tidy. Small shop selling drinks and sweets. Very friendly staff. Large gazebo with freezer and charging points.

Disliked: Parking is a fair walk (10-15 mins) during National trust opening hours. Although only minor, and clearly stated when booking, it might be an issue for some.

Pizzas offered on site, although need pre-ordering which was not possible on last minute bookings like ours (pre-order a couple of days beforehand).

Local attractions

Once you’ve explored Polesden Lacey, set off to see some more Surrey Hills attractions – perhaps taking a walk up Box Hill (20 minutes' drive) or setting off to Buckland Park Lake (also 20 minutes) to wander on nature trails, go paddleboarding on the 50-acre lake or just settle in for a waterside meal at the restaurant. Closer to home, you can also head out onto walking trails straight from the site. For family-friendly days out, try the likes of Bocketts Farm Park (10 minutes), for tractor rides, pig racing and animal feeding, or the Gatwick Aviation Museum (half an hour), to get up close to lots of historical planes. Chessington World of Adventures (20 minutes) and Thorpe Park (40 minutes) aren’t far off, either. For a more grown-up outing, find out where your wine comes from with a trip to Denbies Wine Estate (15 minutes), touring on foot or riding the vineyard train before sampling the award-winning wines.
