  • Small, well-kept Isle of Sheppey site for CAMC members only
  • Half a mile from the coast; pub two minutes' walk away
  • Spacious, sheltered hardstanding pitches; dogs welcome
Grab yourselves a bit of island life on the Kent coast with a stay at Rides House Farm Certified Location, a small and well-maintained site on the Isle of Sheppey for Caravan and Motorhome Club (CAMC) members only. Cross the Kingsferry Bridge and make your way to the far end of the island to get to this quiet site, about half a mile from the coastline. It’s a fairly simple set-up here with no toilet or shower facilities for guests, but the pitches are spacious and surrounded by trees and hedges for a good bit of shelter and privacy. There’s also an electric hookup for each pitch, and you’ll have access to shared facilities including an Elsan point and rubbish bins. Although this is a members-only site, it’s very welcoming to all guests – and that includes the kids and dogs in your travelling party. There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways that can be accessed from the site for handy walkies, and there’s a family and dog-friendly pub a couple of minutes’ walk away with a good menu and a nice beer garden. For your picnic and snack supplies there are shops in Eastchurch, Minster-on-Sea and Leysdown-on-Sea (all within 10 minutes’ drive). As Sheppey's a fairly compact island, you'll be well placed here to explore all it has to offer – from beaches and nature reserves to a great little museum paying homage to the island's status as the country's 'birthplace of aviation'.

Liked: This CL does all the CL basics well and cannot be faulted. The country road from Eastchurch upto campsite is narrow with tight bends and muddy in places but was doable in our 7.45 m mohome. We would imagine in summer it could get very busy due all the places it leads to. Entrance to site itself is very good. As soon as arrive a lady appeared at gate to welcome us and direct us to pitch, take outstanding payment and explain the Leccie payment on a phone App (Campavolt) which is easy. We’ve used it before but do not like the administration fee charged as extra to the electricity used. As if you top up smaller amounts, it costs you more in admin charge. We put £10 in for 4 nights in cold weather and actually left £1.80 odd. We were given a basic info sheet which was helpful but would have appreciated some details about walks/footpaths from site. It’s a very spacious site with good space between pitches. Good gravel hardstanding, ones to left of gate not quite level but manageable. We wouldn’t say the site has ‘views’, it has delightful aspect of trees, rural fields with horses. Also, we wouldn’t say it was remote. It’s only a mile and a half to Eastchurch and although you cannot see them from pitches you are near huge static caravan sites. It is reasonably quiet but quite a bit of surrounding dogs barking. As previous reviews mention the owners do dog agility and their dogs can seem a bit intimidating as you pass the gate to their static if the dogs are out, although well restrained. There also seemed to be at least 3 longer stay vans on site, two of which were workers but not an issue. We walked from site in every direction but really only along roads, sadly couldn’t find any decent footpaths to beach, it was closed due to cliff erosion at far end of road. Then access to Warden itself via track/path was impassable unless you had wellies on due to flooding. The best place to visit we found by foot (about 3 miles down on the prison estate) was Eastchurch Aviation Museum- £2.00 each to get in - fascinating history but not open every day. Probably best suited to people with access to car and/or drive out in motorhome. Bit restrictive if you pitch up and walk to places.

Disliked: We didn’t find a great selection of footpaths, certainly not one to sea/beach despite being so close to it.

Liked: Clean and tidy

Disliked: Local pub closed

From the manager: The local pub being closed isn't anything we have any influence over so it shouldn't affect our rating. As we are a CAMC CL, we have no accomodation, facilities, activities or WiFi so these shouldn't be rated. The site is very clean and tidy and is also child friendly. We are a very welcoming couple and are here for any queries from our campers.

Local attractions

Filling your days should be fairly easy around here – especially if you’re interested in flying. The Isle of Sheppey lays claim to the title of ‘the birthplace of British aviation’ because it was home to the country’s first aircraft factory, and now visitors can learn all about this history at the Eastchurch Aviation Museum (10 minutes) before moving on to the nearby Memorial to the Home of Aviation. Elsewhere around the island, you can hit the beach in Leysdown-on-Sea (10 minutes), go fossil hunting around Warden Point (two minutes) or take a wildlife-spotting wander through 3,300 acres of open space at Elmley National Nature Reserve (20 minutes). Minster Abbey (10 minutes) and the Queenborough Guildhall Museum (15 minutes) are also nearby for heritage hunters. If you fancy a change of scenery, you can always head back across the bridge and seek out some of Kent’s top attractions – places like Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway (20 minutes), Leeds Castle (half an hour) and Canterbury (45 minutes) are popular picks.
