  • Peaceful, family-friendly site in the woods of an ancient deer park
  • A 10-minute drive to Royal Tunbridge Wells; 20 minutes to Hever Castle
  • Café and food shop on site; fishing and clay pigeon shooting close by
Walk this way and you’ll be following in the footsteps of many before you… Yamp Camp Deer Park is surrounded by the woodlands of Eridge Park, the family estate of the Marquess of Abergavenny. Reputedly it’s the oldest enclosed deer park in all of England, and earned itself a mention in the Domesday Book. Fast-forward several centuries from that time and you’ll see that this family-friendly Kent site is now all set up for 21st-century life, with facilities including a reception area with shop and a café, plus separate male and female showers and toilets and accessible facilities. It’s a peaceful tents-only setup in the grass pitching areas, and it’s all kept nice and safe by having ample parking away from the pitches (but close enough to mean you don’t have to trot far with your kit). As you’d expect from a site within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are some gorgeous views from here to form a spectacular backdrop to your stay in an ancient deer park. It all makes an excellent setting for days of rural walks and outdoor pursuits like trout fishing and clay pigeon shooting or attending events at Eridge Park (festivals, sports events and country fairs among them). Elsewhere nearby there are some great circular walks from Royal Tunbridge Wells and Mayfield, watersports at Bewl Water and heritage galore at places like Hever Castle and Penshurst Place. Need a drink after all that activity? There are some great pubs in the local villages Eridge and Frant (both less than 10 minutes’ drive).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful, peaceful surroundings, with visits from deer in the evenings. Spacious pitches in easy reach of the facilities. The shower and loo block has been upgraded this year providing lovely hot showers. Plenty of local attractions to visit - I enjoyed Penshurst Place this time - and the Deer Park Cafe was open all weekend. I had a fantastic breakfast on the Sunday morning. I loved my camp!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I stayed at multiple campsites in my bikepacking trip, and this was easily the best one, by a country mile. The facilities were very good, and the site itself was peaceful, relaxing and well set out. It’s a beautiful spot. The fact there was a cafe on site for a morning coffee, was an added bonus. Great value for money, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

The place where you’ll be staying isn’t the only historic estate around, of course, so it’s a fine plan to set out and see a few more while you’re here. The ruins of Scotney Castle (20 minutes’ drive) and the rather more lavish Hever Castle (25 minutes) are both certainly worth a trip – the water maze at the latter is a particularly fun feature at the latter (don’t forget to pack a towel though…) Elsewhere, you could also take a wander around the 14th-century mansion and formal gardens at Penshurst Place (20 minutes) or take a stroll through the historic streets of Royal Tunbridge Wells (10 minutes). If you’d rather keep your focus on outdoor activities, head to Chalybeate Trout Fishery (five minutes’ walk), Meadowhead Sporting Clay Shooting School (15 minutes’ walk) or Bewl Water (20 minutes’ drive for watersports days. Mayfield (10 minutes) is a good place to set out for circular walks, and there are some fabulous trails at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (25 minutes), which also has a Go Ape course for daredevils who’d like to get up into the treetops.
