  • Well-equipped family-friendly site a 20-minute drive from Deal, Kent
  • Canterbury 25 minutes’ drive; Margate half an hour
  • Playground and ping-pong table; restaurant and covered seating area
Does every member of your family have a different idea about how and where to spend the holidays? Settle any arguments by booking a spot at Embers Camping - Knowlton, in the Kent countryside. ‘What’s in it for me?’ they might all ask. Well: the hiker looking for a challenge might enjoy exploring the hilly surrounds of Kent Downs National Landscape (10 minutes’ drive). Watersports enthusiasts launch their paddleboard or kayak at beaches like Deal (pebbly; 20 minutes), Margate or Broadstairs (sandy; half an hour). Fans of history and architecture head to Dover Castle (20 minutes) or Canterbury (25 minutes), with its spectacular cathedral. Meanwhile, Wingham Wildlife Park (10 minutes) and Port Lympne Safari Park (35 minutes) ought to make the happiness of any budding David Attenborough (and their parents, of course). And what of the site itself? There’s plenty here to keep the whole family busy, starting with a play area, ping-pong tables and a volleyball court. And that’s without taking into account the spacious fields where you can have a kick about or a game of rounders. An on-site restaurant serves snacks, hot food and drinks, which you can devour in the covered seating area; the nearest pub is in Chillenden, a 15-minute walk away. Those who would rather do their own cooking can fashion a barbecue out of the fire basket provided (just add a tripod and grill); for supplies, head to the villages of Eastry (five minutes) or Aylesham (10 minutes), or hit the large supermarkets in Deal.

Liked: Embers Knowlton campsite deserves top marks for its beautiful setting and facilities. It is an excellently maintained site with everything required and more- clean flushing toilets, hot showers, ice block freezer, coffee/snack bar and the preorder pizzas for the evening is a great touch.

Disliked: The only reason I’ve not given a 5* review is because unfortunately our experience was ruined by the particularly unpleasant and rowdy group of people pitched next to us who spent both evenings of our stay talking at shouting volume and relentlessly swearing, with absolutely no consideration for anyone else on site. Whilst this is obviously not the campsite managements fault, I do think it should have been addressed more proactively rather than leaving other campers to be subjected to verbal abuse and aggression from the group after politely requesting that they lower their voices (at which point the manager thankfully did make an appearance).

Pitches are allocated prior to arrival so when making our booking, in the special requests box I had specifically asked for a pitch in a quiet/less busy area if possible, so why we were put in close proximity to this group despite the site being near empty and the whole opposite side if the field being unoccupied I cannot understand.

As long as you are lucky enough not to be pitched next to an awful group of people like we were, I’m sure you will have a great time.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Excellent facilities as described. V. Clean toilets, showers and washing up facilities. Pitches are around the outside of a large field with lots of space for children and adults to play in the middle. Lots of trees for climbing and wilder areas that need exploring. V. Kind staff who were always available for help, advice or just a chat. The bar/snack area was well stocked and wasn't particularly expensive. They could probably stock some other camping staples such a pints of milk, bread bacon etc which might prove popular.

We were the only campers onsite but they were looking forward to an extremely busy bank holiday weekend. I don't think we experienced the best of the site but if you want a quiet camp, come midweek!

Disliked: We'd come back at the weekend when there is more of a buzz.

Local attractions

With two Tudor-era castles (three if you count Sandown, of which there is little left), Deal ought to keep history buffs busy. There’s also the Timeball Tower, a Georgian building topped by a 19th-century time-keeping device. When you’re all historied-out, there are miles of seafront promenade to explore, plus a long pier with views of the town. Canterbury has not one, not two… but three UNESCO World Heritage sites. They are the imposing Gothic cathedral, with its splendid cloisters; the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey; and St Martin’s Church, dating from the 6th century. Also worth a visit is the Beaney House of Art & Knowledge, with diverse displays including the original Bagpuss. Margate has sandy beaches, shallow waters and two tidal pools. After visiting the exhibitions (or a workshop) at the Turner Contemporary, take a stroll along the Harbour Arm, where you can stop for a drink or a bite to eat with views of the town and the Ferris wheel at Dreamland.
