  • Peaceful, family-friendly site on the outskirts of Deal, Kent
  • Bettshanger Country Park five minutes’ drive; Margate half an hour
  • Restaurant for breakfast and dinner; bar with big-screen TV; play area
The Garden of England (that’s Kent, in case you didn’t get the memo) is yours to explore from Lillyroos, a family-friendly site in the countryside that surrounds the seaside town of Deal. The location makes this spot equally suited to watersports enthusiasts (the coast is about 10 minutes’ drive away), keen countryside hikers and cyclists (with paths leading directly off the site) and history buffs, who can visit the medieval town of Sandwich (10 minutes) and the city of Canterbury (half an hour). With a kitchen preparing home-cooked breakfasts (featuring eggs laid by the resident chickens and freshly brewed coffee) and evening meals, plus a cosy bar serving local beers and ciders (which you can sip while lounging on a hay bale), this is also a sweet spot for anyone who is not quite to abandon all creature comforts. Speaking of food… Barbecues are allowed, and you can get your provisions in Deal or at the farmers’ market just down the A258 (a short drive or a five-minute walk), which also has a café. There’s a big-screen TV if you (or a member of your party) just cannot go without your footie while on holiday, and a play area for the kids. This is a quiet site: no shouting or singing after 10pm, and no music (whether live or amplified), so leave your beloved ukulele at home. Dogs are welcome, but do let the site owners know in advance if your canine companion is coming along. Amenities on site include toilet and shower blocks, a washing-up area, ice-pack freezing facilities and recycling points.

Liked: Our three-day stay at Lillyroo’s campsite in Deal was a fantastic little getaway with my two daughters, aged 5 and 2. The site was really well presented and had a warm, welcoming feel as soon as we arrived. Our pitch was clean and well-maintained, and the facilities throughout were spotless. The staff were a real highlight—Sarah, one of the owners, took time to show my girls the chickens and ducks and even let them collect some eggs, which they absolutely loved. Dave, the other owner, went out of his way to help when I brought the wrong gas canister for our camping cooker—he actually went and got the right one for us! There’s a small bar on-site where we could grab drinks, and when the weather turned a bit grey, the cinema room was perfect for putting on cartoons and keeping the kids entertained. There’s a great little play park for the kids, and the location is ideal for exploring nearby attractions like Betteshanger Park. From the clean facilities to the relaxed atmosphere and extra touches like the cinema room and friendly animals, everything added up to a really memorable trip for me and the girls. We’ll definitely be returning.

Disliked: The only thing that would have improved our stay was the option of an electric pitch. It’s not a huge issue, but with little ones and unpredictable weather, having electricity on-site would’ve made things just that bit easier. Hopefully this is something that might be offered in the future, as the rest of the experience really was excellent.

Liked: very helpful site contact (Dave) ensured any questions were answered, and had some good advice about the local area. Nice open site, convenient for Sandwich and Deal. Some of the facilities weren't open, which was a shame, but the other ones were basic but fine

Disliked: not so much "dislikes" but tips:
- you need more hooks in the basin areas and in the showers. really annoying as campers not to have hooks to hang clothes and towels on as you shower/wash
- fix the mens shower so you can hook the shower head on something above you
- label the bins better. it wasnt at all clear what should go where for recycling etc
- the washing-up sinks are far too low for an adult and really hurt your back leaning down to them. Put them at the height they would be in a kitchen!

From the manager: Thanks so much for your feedback – and sorry some bits weren’t quite right during your visit. As it was our first operational weekend of the season and our open day, the aim was to get honest feedback like yours, so we really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

We’re already working on those points and making improvements – so next time you visit, you’ll notice the changes (and a few extras too!).

Liked: Nice quiet site, easy to find. Only 4 people on the site this time of year and didn't hear anyone else. All the showers and toilets were very clean, didn't go to the bar as I had covid. But in the morning the owner came around and had a chat. Allowed to have firepit, which was cool and tbh the owner wasn't strict on leaving at 11am, so left a bit later. But I would visit again and tentbox friendly, what more could I want. There was a bit of road noise from the main road, but that is mentioned in the details, but didn't stop me getting 8hrs sleep. No electric hook ups, but just run off batteries.

Local attractions

You can learn all about the area’s coal-mining past at the Kent Mining Museum at Bettshanger Country Park (five minutes’ drive), where there are also walking and cycling paths for all abilities, from a family-friendly tarmac track to some pretty challenging routes for experienced mountain bikers. Kids can also have a go at archery and orienteering. With its vast pebbly beach, two historic castles and long promenade skirted by a cycle path, Deal is a great destination for families. Grab some fish and chips and sit on Walmer Green (on Sunday afternoons, in the summer, there is live music at the bandstand), or stroll along the pier, keeping an eye on the Timeball Tower’s regular drop. Whether you’re into vintage rides (at colourful Dreamland amusement park) or modern art exhibitions (at Turner Contemporary), Margate (half an hour) has something for you. There’s also a sandy beach with a tidal pool, and an Old Town dotted with independent shops and cafés.
