  • Family-friendly camping in a 16-acre Kent woodland near Canterbury
  • A 15-minute drive to Howletts Wildlife Park; Sandwich Bay 20 minutes
  • Campfires allowed; pubs and shops five minutes’ drive
What’s it to be – a back-to-nature experience or a camping break near lots of family attractions? Actually, there’s no need to choose between the two, because at Little Nash Woods Camping you can have both. Surrounded by Kent farmland near Canterbury, the pitches here are hidden away in a 16-acre woodland filled with wildlife (tread quietly and you might spot dragonflies, toads, owls and rabbits) and are seriously peaceful. Yet they’re within half an hour’s drive of the beach, zoos and a historic city… and the list could go on. Little Nash Woods is all about a stay that’s got the relaxed vibe of wild camping, but with the added bonus of spacious bathroom facilities with hot showers, flushing toilets, a family shower room, hairdryers and phone-charging points. Please note that cars are not allowed on site, but wheelbarrows are available for you to wheel gear to your pitch. How to spend time on site? Perhaps explore the woodland, borrow the badminton set from the owners or plunder the books and games for rainy-day entertainment – and you’re welcome to bring dogs along to share the fun too. Barbecues are allowed, so pick up goodies for the grill at the farm shop (five minutes’ drive); alternatively, take a stroll to a local pub (there are a couple within 40 minutes’ walk) if you’re having an evening off cooking.

Rabbit non-electric earth tent pitch (seven person)

Liked: Had a fabulous weekend with my husband, adult children and grandchildren. We stayed at rabbit and had plenty of room to pitch two large tents, could easily fit another it was that spacious. The set up was great, close to the amenities which was ideal with three young children, with a lovely clean bathroom, and showers, the family shower is ideal for ppl with small children. Absolutely loved the games hut, plenty of choice to amuse everyone and we were lucky enough to have great weather to play badminton and corn hole, the kids also enjoyed doing craft stuff in the hideaway, and we were pleasantly surprised how much thought had gone into this site. The honesty shop was great, and lovely to see that the prices were very reasonable, not over inflated like some places... the free apples were a nice touch! Also, if you're up early enough, the seating area to watch the sunrise was a lovely idea.

Disliked: Nothing!!

Woodpecker non-electric earth tent pitch (four person, woodland)

Liked: We had a lovely 2 nights stay in this beautiful woodland.
We went the week after summer holidays so there wasn't many campers on site which suited us fine, although the pitches are well thought out so I can't imagine many campers would have changed our experience either.
The pitches are well maintained and feel very homely.
The feel of wild camping with those little extras a short walk away. (Shower, toilet, small shop, charging point).

Disliked: (Not a dislike, just a heads up)

We had a few hours of high wind when we stayed which meant we were asked to stay in the communal area which is not built up with woodland, for safety reasons.
As the pitches are right under the trees, the owners obviously can't guarantee branches/twigs won't fly off, so during these times you are asked to move off the pitch. This was fine with us as the communal area is a nice place to sit and read, play games or gather your thoughts whilst looking at the view.

Woodpecker non-electric earth tent pitch (four person, woodland)

Liked: We loved this campsite. Everything was so thoughtful, from the games hut to the honesty shop. It just made the experience easy and comfortable. The local town has two lovely pubs and Wingham Wildlife Park which was a bonus. All in all, we could have stayed here for the entire weekend without leaving!

Liked: After booking last summer we had to come again!!!
This is the BEST campsite you could ever visit!!
The scenery is so picturesque…
Lighting the fire in the evenings and waking up the birds is amazing.

The shop is super cute and handy to buy logs.

Toilets are immaculate and so are the showers!

Pitch size was perfect.. you cannot go wrong with any of them! All spaced out perfectly.
We didn’t hear a sound from anyone else.

Cannot wait to re book for next summer! Thank you Simon and family! :) 5 stars all round!!

Local attractions

Plenty to do in these parts – so where to start first? Animal-mad families can see some of the endangered species in the breeding programme at Howletts Wildlife Park (15 minutes’ drive) – including elephants and gorillas – roaming in spacious enclosures. Energetic types can have a go on wake boards pulled on a line at Whitemills Wake and Aqua Park (five minutes), get out on the River Stour for boating adventures from Canoe Wild at Grove Ferry (10 minutes), or play golf on one of the three courses overlooking Sandwich Bay (20 minutes) before having a splash in the sea. Young kids might like to collect fossils and build dens at Betteshanger Park (15 minutes), while rides on the vintage rollercoasters at Dreamland Margate (25 minutes) will hopefully keep teens smiling. For less raucous ways of spending a day, tour the modern art at Margate’s Turner Contemporary (half an hour), or stand on the spot of a famous medieval murder at Canterbury’s famous landmark cathedral (25 minutes), visit the wonky bookshop at Sir John Boys House and admire the plantings in Westside Gardens along the Stour.
