  • Off-grid eco-cabin in a peaceful 10-acre field near Canterbury
  • A 45-minute drive from Leeds Castle, and 25 minutes from Dover
  • Dog-friendly glamping with lovely views through a full-length window
What a spot for a couples’ get-away-from-it-all rural retreat. Canterbury Escape Off The Grid is a stylish, dog-friendly and totally off-grid glamping experience in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – a spot so peaceful that it’s hard to remember you’re only an hour’s drive from central London. Inside the sustainably made wooden cabin, everything is ready for guests: there's simple but comfy furniture in the living area, which is heated by woodburner – a supply of kindling comes as part of the deal – and a shower in the bijou bathroom. Cuddle up in the double bed (all linen is included) to make the most of the spectacular views through plate glass windows… and chances are breakfast in bed may become a habit. Powered by solar energy, the cabin has a kitchen corner with cooking utensils (including a snazzy stovetop espresso maker and cafetière) and a fridge. All you need to bring from home is food, or pick up gourmet treats from local farm shops – there are several within 20 minutes’ drive. Incidentally, there are several gastropubs close by too. The nearest is 30 minutes’ walk away (book ahead as it’s popular) so you might like to ditch the car and make a night of it sampling the best of Kent produce. You can also head out hiking along scenic footpaths direct from the site – any four-legged friends will likely be very happy about that – or simply choose to chill out, read a book or meditate in peaceful surroundings.

Local attractions

The Kent Downs AONB is crossed with footpaths through ancient woodland and dotted with historic villages. For inspiration, check the local map in the cabin. If you’d like to add a goal to your walks, make for Simpsons Wine Estate (an hour’s stroll) for tasting and buying; booking ahead is advised. And, of course, Canterbury (20 minutes’ drive) has one of the most famous cathedrals in the UK. Scene of a grisly murder in 1170, it is well worth a visit for its exceptional (largely) Gothic architecture, intricate choir screen and peaceful cloisters. After that, linger awhile in the city, taking in St Augustine’s Abbey and the eccentric half-timbered museum at Beaney House of Art and Knowledge. Another slice of history is over at Leeds Castle (45 minutes), where you can easily speed a day with tours of sumptuous rooms, falconry displays, fragrant gardens and a lakeside golf course. Dover (25 minutes) is home of England’s biggest castle, where you can look out at views of the English Channel, nose around the military museum and explore the labyrinthine tunnels from World War II. Afterwards, have a stroll along St Margaret’s Beach (half an hour) to admire the soaring landmark White Cliffs of Dover.

Cabin

Liked: Beautiful nature

Disliked: Overall very unhygienic and disappointing cabin! Most of the kitchen utensils greasy and dirty, 2 floor mats extremely dirty and old. Pillows very old and poor quality. Shower leaking, but told to respect amounts used. Kettle had large amount of lime scale. On the path to cabin several rubbish left (coke can, dog litter bag & other). Both wood burners not cleaned from previous stay. Upon booking informed wood and kindling included, but in the txt day ahead of arrival told to bring your own. The owner twice ignored my message and did not respond or try to resolve the complaint. I have photos to show the above findings - owner not interested.
