  • Luxury safari tents at a riding centre a 10-minute drive from Newport
  • Butterfly World IOW five minutes’ drive; Ventnor Beach half an hour
  • Riding activities, playground and farmyard animals; restaurant
Have the children been badgering you for pony rides and other horse-based activities? Then a likely way to put a great big smile on their faces is by booking a holiday at Glamping at Island Riding Centre, a small site on an equestrian complex on the outskirts of Newport (10 minutes’ drive), on the Isle of Wight. While the kids take part in assorted riding activities (from pony rides, to private and group lessons, and from pony pampering for smaller guests to onsite hacks of about 2.5 miles), you can relax in the luxury of your spacious safari tent. This is proper glamping: your accommodation comes with separate rooms featuring real beds (a kingsize for the adults and bunks for the kids), a bathroom, a comfortable living area and a kitchenette with hot plates, a fridge and all necessary utensils to whip up a decent meal. The outdoor decked area is a pretty sweet spot for a little alfresco dining under the stars; and while you sip the last of your wine, you can keep an eye on the kids as they chase each other around in the securely fenced communal lawn, make friends with the resident animals or explore the playground, with swings and a climbing frame. If you want a break from cooking duties, the on-site restaurant serves pizzas, burgers and chicken wings; the nearest pub is about a mile away on the road to Wootton Bridge (a short drive or a 20-minute walk; there is also a bus stop within easy walking distance of the main entrance); and there are more dining options in Newport town.

Local attractions

Interesting sights accessed via an off-road path include Butterfly World IOW (10 minutes’ walk), where you can stroll among these colourful winged creatures in a tropical tent, and Monkey Haven - Primate Rescue Centre (15 minutes), home to macaques and marmosets, as well as birds of prey. Both are less than a five-minute drive away. Among the exhibits at the interactive Wight Military and Heritage Museum (15 minutes’ drive) are artefacts from both World Wars – from vehicles and weapons, to uniforms; visitors can also have a go at an air-rifle shooting range and a bomb-disposal robot. On the south coast of the island is Ventnor Beach (half an hour), with retro-style beach huts. After a day on the shingle, head to Ventnor Botanic Garden for a stroll among the blossoming geraniums and other colourful plants that thrive in this unique microclimate.
