  • Small pop-up site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Winchester; half an hour from Marwell Zoo
  • Spacious pitches on a working farm; campfire wood for sale
Splendid Hampshire countryside views and plenty of peace and quiet are what’s on offer at Woodlands Camping. This small-scale pop-up site is just on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park about five minutes’ drive south of the village of Ropley. If you’re after clubhouses, arcades and on-site entertainment you’ll want to look elsewhere: this site on a working farm is all about the fresh air, the rural peace and the lovely views. The folk that run the site have deliberately limited the number of pitches available in order to ensure plenty of space for everyone, and kept the amenities to just the essentials of toilets, showers and a washing-up area. There’s a ‘leave no trace’ policy in place here, with guests all encouraged to do their bit to preserve the environment around them (and that stretches to being asked not to feed the farm’s horses, as much as they might bat their eyelashes at you in hope…) Campfires and barbecues are permitted but you’ll need to keep them in a suitable container off the ground; there’s wood available to buy on site from locally managed woodland. Pick up supplies for your barbecue (or picnics while you’re out exploring the countryside) at the village store, or head to the bigger supermarkets in Winchester or Petersfield, both about 20 minutes’ drive away.

The Meadow non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely peaceful location, not crowded with lots of space around the pitches. Plenty of walks from the site and easy to get to walks over the South Downs. Facilities were basic but as this is an off grid site that was expected.

The Clearing non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We loved the remote location, we heard and saw so many birds it was wonderful! Very eco friendly with a back to basics feel. We stayed in the clearing which only has 7 pitches and so it felt like we had loads of space and privacy. We loved our stay and plan to come back in the warmer months.

Disliked: No dislikes - there was no hot water for washing up but we didn't mind.

The Meadow non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Little piece of bliss … a hidden oasis of peace, birdsong, ponies and ancient surrounding woodland.

Jason the owner is a very interesting and knowledge guy, very welcoming & clearly passionate about this eco style of camping … so refreshing to meet someone in it for all the right reasons.

Very reasonable price for a large pitch and the surroundings that go with it. The first day there were 8 of us and still tons of space between. I was lucky enough to have the whole meadow to myself the second day with just the ponies and wildlife for company..

Total nature reset, much needed. Oh and the morning outside hot shower was lush! Thank you so much Jason for an awesome couple of days 😊 🙏

Disliked: Absolutely nothing !

The Clearing non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: What a glorious site this is. Absolutely in the middle of nowhere. Surrounded by birdsong, even an owl last night and a woodpecker this morning. Jason really helpful and provided some wood so we could enjoy a wonderful firepit last night. Stargazing a real treat. There’s a picnic table on each pitch. Facilities simple, in line with the type of campsite. Compost loos and a shower and a sink for washing up. Stayed with a friend in his camper and we were able to park next to each other and set up camp. Loved it, and will be back.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

That South Downs location means lots of scope for walks and bike rides in gorgeous scenery. If you don’t know where to start, perhaps head for popular spots like the Queen Elizabeth Country Park or Harting Down (both about a half-hour drive) or park in West Meon (10 minutes) for a walk on the 10-mile Meon Valley Trail. There are plenty of options for different days out too: literary fans may like to drop in at Jane Austen’s House (15 minutes), while those with more of a scientific outlook explore the exhibits at Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium (15 minutes). National Trust estates at Hinton Ampner (15 minutes) and Uppark (half an hour) are worth visiting as well. The exotic animals, activities and adventure playgrounds make Marwell Zoo (half an hour) a top pick for family outings, and there are plenty of interesting things to seek out in Winchester (20 minutes) too. For a more relaxed outing, maybe a steam-powered ride on the Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line (15 minutes) will fit the bill?
