Had enough of other people? Ready for some quiet time out in the countryside? Grab your partner or set off solo to the Quarry at Avington, a peaceful Hampshire location that’s got just the one shepherd’s hut for guest accommodation. Yes, that’s right – this secret spot will be exclusively yours, with no neighbours at all (apart from the birds that live in the surrounding trees, of course). It’s on the edge of Avington Park Golf Course and just over the road from the River Itchen. Your immediate surroundings are the northern part of the South Downs National Park, so it’s scenic indeed – but it’s also easily accessed from the nearby M3 or A31. This adults-only hut is set up for a cosy couple’s stay, with a comfy superking bed, heating and a kitchenette with fridge, hob, mini oven/air fryer, kettle and coffee maker. Pack your charcoal, sausages and marshmallows too, because there’s outdoor seating and a barbecue for your alfresco evenings. Just next to the hut is a private-use trailer with your shower and toilet inside. Firewood, towels and bed linen are all provided here, along with lots of other handy bits including cooking kit and basics like salt, pepper, oil, tea and washing-up liquid. That should cut down the amount of stuff you’ll need to bring – and when you’re packing for a stay here it’s always worth remembering that you’ll need to transport everything from the car park to the hut in a wheelbarrow (although it’s less than 50 metres, so not far at all).

Local attractions

You could choose to cosy up in your hut for your full stay if you really want to experience seclusion, but it is worth getting out a little bit – even if that’s just for a round of golf at Avington Park Golf Course (15 minutes’ walk to the entrance) or a stroll along the banks of the River Itchen. Being in the South Downs National Park, there are lots more lovely walks around, along with historic attractions such as National Trust - Hinton Ampner (15 minutes’ drive) and Jane Austen’s House (20 minutes). For other ways to get out into the surroundings, take a ride on the Watercress Line from Alresford (10 minutes) or contact Juniper Leisure (10 minutes) for a tank-driving experience. The centre of Winchester (15 minutes) is a great place to explore – the cathedral is a highlight for many, but there’s a lot to enjoy just wandering through the historic streets and visiting the museums and pubs. During the summer you might also like to see what’s on at the Grange Festival (five minutes) – opera, classical and jazz events are on the menu.
