  • Family-friendly Hampshire site in the South Downs National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Petersfield; half an hour from the south coast
  • On-site pizza restaurant, bar and café called The Dell Hampshire
A South Downs National Park setting with gorgeous views across valleys and farmland? Say no more: Hampshire's Cedar Valley has spacious pitches with all of the above, plus access to neat and tidy amenity cabins housing showers, toilets and sinks. The pitches are suitable for families or other groups: send the kids to the designated mown area to play football, fly kites or muck around. For downtime from the kids, adults can beeline to The Dell, the lively on-site pizza restaurant, bar and café. Barbecues and campfires are permitted to allow you to live that proper outdoorsy lifestyle. West Meon and East Meon, both five minutes' drive away from the site, have small village shops should you need to pick up any last-minute supplies. Plus, when you need to clean up after your group barbecues or picnics, there is also a covered washing-up area provided on site. Thinking about where to go exploring? Cedar Valley is within half an hour's drive of the south coast and an hour and a half from London. It's surrounded by countryside with scenic walks and cycling routes (including the South Downs Way, for the more ambitious hikers among you), as well as several wild swimming spots and some very fine Hampshire pubs.

Meadow non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (no groups)

Liked: The main attraction was the bathrooms: spotless and borderline hotel quality! I stayed on a weekday in September so the campsite was exceptionally quiet and I wasn't expecting much, but being able to have a proper, hot shower with plenty of room to move meant I barely wanted to carry on hiking the next day. Cedar Valley also sent plenty of information prior to my stay, and the check-in process was very easy.

Disliked: The Meadow borders a large open field on one and a half sides, so if the wind is blowing a certain direction it could get very exposed! Several of the pitches are also on a slight hill, although I got free choice so simply picked a flat one.

Paddock non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Good location, lovely setting and dark sky ( beautiful stars when no clouds). Easy access to the coast. Good for children and groups

Disliked: Overcrowded, no space between pitches at busy times. Had to get up at 6am to ensure access to shower without queuing when busy. £4 per night for dogs.

Meadow non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (no groups)

Liked: Super easy to book and check in. Cedar valley sent a very useful guide to everything we might need/want before our stay like check in instructions, things they offer, local information etc. A lovely family friendly campsite with added bonus of a cafe/bar with food options. Loved that you can purchase wood and have a campfire as really adds to the camping experience. Pitches are spacious and toilet/showers are clean. Felt nice and tucked away in farmland but only a short drive to Petersfield. Would recommend to others and visit again!

Disliked: Only thing that was annoying was that it wasn't clear to us that the pizzas weren't being served (due to a recent fire they had which we were unaware of as we aren't local) so when we booked the campsite, we had planned on having pizzas on the Saturday evening. We saw notices around the campsite that we would need to pre order our pizzas which we were happy to do but we had a problem on the website. So we went to the bar to ask and were told that they were out of action and have been for a while so meant we had to make alternative food plans last minute. So would have been good to have been made aware of this when we made out booking. Or even when we arrived and checked in or have a notice/sign at the bar or campsite to say this wasn't available.

Local attractions

Get out via two wheels: several decent bike tracks are on the estate itself or you can pedal off around the area's many lanes and bike routes. A good run is to Petersfield (15 minutes' drive) to stock up on armfuls of fresh produce at the Wednesday and Saturday markets. If trotting's more your thing, ask the Cedar Valley team about the pony rides available in the surrounding countryside: both experienced and amateur riders can take their pick from three-hour rides through first-class woodland, or around the area's cross-country course. If you prefer your equine animals at a speedy distance, the racecourse at Goodwood is about half an hour's drive away. More of a foot-based wanderer? The Cedar Valley team has mapped out many walks in the area so you can wander off to see where your feet might take you. The South Downs Way is close by: try the walk from Petersfield to Cocking, via Nursted Copse and Harting Down.
