Hikers, cyclists and horse riders also have the option of joining the Shipwrights Way at Liss (five minutes). The historic town of Petersfield (10 minutes) has a lively market every Wednesday and Saturday in the central square, and you can also take the train from there to visit Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (40 minutes by rail) or catch the ferry from Southampton (50 minutes) to the Isle of Wight. For more slow-paced rail journeys, board the Watercress Line at Alton (25 minutes’ drive) to chug through Hampshire countryside behind a vintage steam engine. Ideas for family days out include a visit to Gilbert White’s House and Gardens (10 minutes), where kids can learn about the 18th-century naturalist through interactive exhibits, pond dipping and nature trails.
