  • Laidback pop-up site on a coastal Essex farm
  • Five minutes' drive from Mistley and 15 minutes from Harwich
  • Direct beach access; a few minutes' walk from the Essex Way
Ragmarsh Farm Pop-up Campsite is a relaxed nine-acre farm site on the peaceful east coast, located between Wrabness and Mistley. With direct beach access and stonking sea views, there's a lot about this place to lead one to believe that truly, the only way is Essex… The farm actually owns the stretch of beach adjacent to the pitches, and the waters of the Stour are splendid for bathing at high tide; with its gentle gradient, it's easy to always stay within your depth. Because of the stony sea bed, you'd do well to pack a pair of jelly shoes or flip flops if wading out here. This site is off-grid, but high-end mobile loos are available in a trailer that's subject to thorough and regular cleaning. There's also a shower trailer where you can scrub up after dips in the sea. Barbecues are allowed at Ragmarsh Farm Pop-up Campsite (on the paving slab provided), and there's a mains cold water supply that guests can access (the site also has a bowser for non-drinking purposes, and sells bottled water in five-litre bottles). This pretty part of the coast doesn't get quite as much press as its Suffolk counterpart on the other side of the River Stour estuary, but strolling along the nearby Essex Way (a few minutes' walk from site) is a great way to explore these quieter beaches, marshes and well-preserved seafront villages (like Mistley, which is five minutes' drive away) and towns (like Manningtree, which is 10).

Liked: Clean, effective loo block with plenty of loo paper and soap, warm water for hand washing. Cold water tap for fresh water. Beautiful views over the estuary. Swimming was gorgeous just a little way along from the site (at the beach) at high tide, and it's a fab place for walking - the Essex Way to Wrabness and then Harwich, or the other way to Manningtree.

Disliked: I recognise this is (currently) only a pop-up site, but it was tricky to have a shower without the water spraying everywhere and getting everything wet. Better shower facilities would be good. More local information about what to do and see locally would be welcome. Some was provided (thank you!) in a folder in the loo block, but this was empty on my (and lots of other people's) arrival on Friday. For those visitors without a car, the hire of fire pits and logs would be a fine addition. Also, perhaps a more equitable pricing arrangement - I (a solo camper without a car) paid the same as a group of up to 6 with car, additional small tent etc.

Liked: The site was lovely. Views across the estuary were stunning. The toilets were immaculate and the showers were warm and clean. We loved the switch system to start the generator for power, saving fuel. So much better for the environment than having it running 24/7.
Our tent neighbours were great and it felt like a secure environment, despite being remote.

Liked: We loved the location. Beautiful views, beach, trees, fields, everything you’d want.

Quiet and peaceful. Plenty of space the kids to run around. You do get the occasional train passing through but we didn’t even notice half the time.

The facilities on offer were great. Clean, spacious toilets, always stocked and hot water available. Multiple showers too.

The farmers that run it are really friendly, helpful and accommodating.

Disliked: There wasn’t anything that we disliked. It was exactly what we were hoping for.

Liked: Such a peaceful site! Amazing views of the river Stour. A great site if you want to hear the sounds of nature (and especially if you like trains - they run along the top of the field). The site slopes down to the river with the lower area being more level. It’s not a manicured lawn, the grass is left longer and you definitely need a torch for night time. There’s little artificial light, just a glow from Harwich, so lots of stars! There is access to the beach from the corner of the site. Beach shoes are advisable for paddling.

The toilets are lovely and showers fine. They run on a generator switched on by a button as you enter which then runs for 20 mins.

Chip shop on the road back to Mistley (very tasty) & we visited The Village Maid pub in Bradwell, walkable if you have time.

Disliked: Nothing! I’d not take younger children as there is easy access to the river.

Liked: Views were amazing and very peaceful area, lovely walks down the beach area which were so close by and clean

Disliked: Facilities were not very nice, toilets were very smelly and the showers were not fit for purpose, also no food on site as suggested, ended up just eating snacks as that’s all we brought!( Because of there being a food available to buy on site we decided to not bring any cooking equipment. Big mistake) also no one on site to ask any questions and they did not answer the phone!

Liked: My partner and I loved Ragmarsh farm. The idyllic views were perfect to wake up to and the nature reserve was a delight to explore.
Richard, one the owners, even gave us a lift into town after our car broke down!
A lovely, well run campsite that we highly recommend.
