Barleylands campsite

  • Dog-friendly campsite in the grounds of a popular farm park
  • Between Billericay and Basildon; easily accessible by public transport
  • Restaurant, tea rooms, farm shop and kids' attractions
Spread across a spacious setting in the Essex countryside, Barleylands is a fab farm campsite with plenty of room for families to relax (along with their dogs if they're coming along for a country break). The flat grass fields at this working farm have basic facilities including hot showers and well-maintained toilet blocks and are a few hundred yards from a popular farm park where there are all sorts of animals, shops and food options to explore. Guests staying the night at Barleylands also qualify for a special stay-and-play discount, making it even easier to access its walk-through aviary, tractor rides, bird of prey displays and indoor and outdoor playgrounds. (The park is particularly recommended for kids between the ages of three and 10.) Also close by is the Barleylands’ craft village (open from Tuesday to Sunday), where there are over 30 different studios to explore. And, as it's surrounded by open countryside, Barleylands has great access to local footpaths and rights of way. Other outdoor leisure options in the area include a golf course and an equestrian centre, both of which are under a mile away. Barleylands is also easily accessible by public transport: regular local bus services stop opposite the park and can take you into either Billericay (journey time 15 minutes) or Basildon (20 minutes), where there are shops, cinemas, leisure centres and mainline railway stations. Please note that this is a working farm so there may be some noise from farm machinery at times.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Decent pub in nearby village. Flat pitches.

Disliked: Sewerage smell in places near the toilets. Shower temperature adjustment stuck on very hot.

From the manager: Thank you for staying at Barleylands and taking the time to leave a review. And thank you for your feedback. We are in the process of investigating the smell from the toilet block and we will get the shower temperatures checked. Barleylands is very much a family themed attraction, however we have our craft village nearby which offers many different types of interests including glassblowing and pottery and we also haveEscape beauty on site. We appreciate that not every campsite will always be the preferred campsite for each and every guest, however we do pride ourselves on our excellent nearby facilities, transport connections and proximity to Essex countryside and coastline.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely site, very clean toilets, friendly staff and nice large pitches. Lots to do and see.

Disliked: There is no way to walk to the local farm shop. Both exit gates have padlocks on them which are opposite the shop. A good idea would be to have a public gate with a combination code on it so people who are staying on site can access the shop. It is not walkable due to it being on a main road with no pavement

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Good large pitch, good communication and pitch was easy to find.
Phone had great 5g signal.

Disliked: Whilst the toilets were clean and tidy, in the women’s toilets near the stables, only 1 of the 2 loos had a lock on the door, something which I would think is an easy fix.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The site was in the right place for what we needed (i.e. handy for the Dart Crossing). Decent-sized level(ish) pitch with EHU and water handy.

Disliked: The showers were appalling and the whole site far too big and impersonal for us. Glad we were only staying for one night.

Local attractions

Bounce down to Basildon (10 minutes’ drive), where the town centre has cinemas, a shopping centre and plenty of restaurants and pubs where you can spend evenings away from base. For more urban explores, you’ll be about an hour by car or train from central London, making Barleylands a top option for weekends away from the capital or a mix of rural and city days out. Getting to the seaside is also easily arranged here, as Barleylands is 20 minutes from Thorney Bay beach, a family-friendly spot on Canvey Island with great views over the Thames Estuary. Southend (30 minutes) is also an option for traditional days by the beach, with amusements and a pier to sweeten the deal. For more things to do, take the family off to Adventure Island theme park (30 minutes), Diggerland Kent (40 minutes) or, for quieter times, try stately homes like Hylands House (25 minutes) and Boreham House (25 minutes), both of which have a range of gardens and pretty parklands to explore.
