  • Secluded glamping site in a private paddock three miles from Battle
  • A 15-minute drive from Hastings; half an hour from Camber Sands
  • Kitchen, barbecue, logs and fresh eggs supplied; pony rides on site
For a secluded glamping stay on the historic 1066 Route, head three miles outside of Battle and set up at Swallows Oast Glamping. Not that there'll actually be an awful lot of setting up to do when you arrive – the canvas accommodation here comes comfortably furnished and is fully-equipped for various styles of stay. Beds are made up ready for your arrival, and you’ll also be supplied with a barbecue, charcoal and a bag of logs to make sure there’s a warm evening ahead. A few eggs from the farm’s free-range chickens are also included, and guests can buy extra eggs, logs and coal from the farm during their stay too. Handily, the units come with private flushing toilets and hot showers. There’s no electricity in the tents, but guests are welcome to use the fridge in the farm’s barn to store food and drink. First steps for exploring the surrounding Sussex countryside should be taken in the woodland next door – there's direct access, so simply wander over that way whenever you feel like it. There's also the possibility of trotting around the grounds on horseback – have a chat with the farmers, and (for an extra charge) they'll be happy to sort pony rides for kids. It's good to have Battle (10 minutes' drive) so close too, as this historic town has a small supermarket, an abbey and a railway station.

Local attractions

Looking a little further afield, this spot is well-placed for visits to the historic sites around Hastings and Battle (where the Battle of Hastings actually took place…), all of which can be reached within five to 10 minutes' drive. Another local landmark you won't want to miss is Bodiam Castle and its moat (10 minutes). Once you've taken a tour of the castle itself, the building is perhaps best admired from the water, for which you have the paddleboarding and kayaking opportunities of Bodiam Boating Station (15 minutes). A wider range of watersports can be tried out at Bewl Water (20 minutes), where fishing, lakeside strolls and splashing around at the aqua park are also on the menu. For some fresh forest air, there's also Bedgebury National Pinetum (20 minutes) with its bike trails and ace adventure park. Fond of feeling the sand between your toes? It's half an hour to ever-popular Camber Sands, while Hastings (15 minutes) and its shingle beach, castle and funicular have all the makings of a fine day out.
