  • Family-friendly campsite on the private Bentley Estate in East Sussex
  • South Downs National Park 10 minutes’ drive; Seaford half an hour
  • Activities, licensed snack bar and takeaway pizzas available on site
Set on the leafy 700-acre Bentley Estate, 10 minutes’ drive from Ringmer in East Sussex, Embers Camping - Bentley has been going for quite a few years… and the site is doing something very right, as guests return time after time. Kids will certainly never be bored here; there’s volleyball and ping-pong on site, as well as room on the extensive camping fields for running around with a ball. If that’s not enough, the tree-top rope courses at Branching Out Adventures (10 minutes’ walk) present challenges to adventurous teens, while junior guests can get their first taste of extreme sports on mini-zipwires. All your foodie needs are catered for at The Embers Snack Bar, from morning coffee and cheese toasties to a day-long supply of ice creams for the kids. You can look forward to a pint of draft beer or a chilled glass of wine after your day’s adventuring, and come evening, the oven is fired up so you can tuck into freshly made pizzas around your campfire (just remember to order the pizzas prior to your arrival). Every pitch at Embers comes with its own fire basket, which doubles as a campfire or barbecue – the latter with the addition of a tripod and grill. Firewood is also available to buy on site. Modern washrooms provide all the comfort you need while camping, with spacious cubicles for family showers and underfloor heating for extra warmth on chillier days.

Bell tent

Liked: A beautiful safe environment for young children with tents all pitched around the perimeter of the site & vehicles restricted to car park except for dropping off equipment/shopping etc
Amazing wood fired pizzas & lovely coffee.
Staff were friendly & informative.
Great sized pitched tent took all the hassle out of our w/e stay & no need to pack up - bonus !
Good washing up facilities & fresh water points.
Lovely to have open fires with the provided pit & plenty of logs for sale

Disliked: Limited toilet & shower facilities but they were kept pretty clean with the exception of tissue paper on the floor - maybe a roll of loo paper would create less mess 🤷‍♀️

Local attractions

The iconic chalk downlands of the South Downs National Park (10 minutes’ drive) offer all-comers a landscape as diverse as it is breathtaking. Grab your hiking boots or your mountain bikes and head off on family expeditions through undulating countryside, ancient woodland and open-access farmland. South-coast beaches might be your next port of call; have a refreshing dip in the waves off Seaford (half an hour), admire the sparkling-white Seven Sisters cliffs at Birling Gap (40 minutes), or introduce the kids to a traditional English seaside resort like Eastbourne (35 minutes), with amusement arcades on its Victorian pier. You can also book kayaking, dinghy sailing and paddleboarding at Buzz Active Eastbourne (half an hour). Toddlers will enjoy a day out at Knockhatch Adventure Park (20 minutes), where they can ride gentle carousels, watch raptor displays and cuddle furry bunny rabbits. Another big-hitting local attraction for younger visitors is Drusillas Park (25 minutes), with a petting farm, mini-train rides and themed trails to follow.
