Terrace for peaceful relaxing

  • Luxurious, quiet and adults-only shepherd’s hut on an East Sussex farm
  • Battle Abbey 10 minutes’ drive and Bodiam Castle 15 minutes
  • Exclusive-use shower room, well-equipped kitchen and woodburner
Tucked under trees in the corner of an East Sussex field, The Nest at Netherfield Place is just the spot for a bit of peaceful adults-only R&R. Set amid greenery on a 300-acre working farm in the hamlet of Netherfield, the cosy shepherd’s hut has been carefully hand-crafted from up-cycled wood wherever possible. Your bijou accommodation is found in a field well away from the farm’s main campsite, and about a mile from the farmhouse and barns, so you can completely disconnect from 21st-century life and just ‘be’. The hut interior is nattily done out with recycled artworks, there’s a king-size bed with allergy-free linens provided, a bedside table and a large drawer under the bed for limited storage. There are plugs for USB cables and phone chargers, but as the hut is run on solar power, hairdryers cannot be used. Heating for cooler days comes from a woodburner, and the kitchen corner has a sink, fridge and gas hob, plus a few utensils and crockery for two. Double glass doors lead out onto the decking for amazing views from the picnic table and seating, where you can chill on warmer days and watch livestock grazing in neighbouring fields. A few steps away from the hut is a tiled shower room for your exclusive use, with towels, robes and eco-friendly toiletries supplied.

Local attractions

History buffs can soon be exploring 1066 Country; the medieval ruins of Battle Abbey (10 minutes’ drive) stand over the battle site where Harold lost out to William the Conqueror. Surrounded by a moat, romantic Bodiam Castle (15 minutes) is open for self-guided tours, while the formal gardens at Tudor-era Herstmonceux Castle (20 minutes) are also open for exploration. You can burn off some energy on the hiking and cycling trails at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (25 minutes), and if you hit a rainy day, there are workshops and interactive science displays to keep you busy at the Observatory Science Centre (20 minutes). The shepherd’s hut is also only a short drive from the south-east coast and the pebble beach at Bexhill-on-Sea (20 minutes), where you can have a paddle in the sea and munch fish and chips on the prom. Hastings (25 minutes) has a renovated pier, which is home to amusement arcades and food stalls, and Bulverhythe Beach (half an hour) is a quieter option with a wooden shipwreck visible at low tide.
