The pitches

  • Family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Lewes on the South Downs
  • Easy access to the South Downs Way; West Quay Beach 20 minutes’ drive
  • Stunning views from the pitches; guest meals cooked over a wood fire
Many of the best things in life are woodfired – like ovens, stoves and, of course, pizzas... And that certainly holds true at Woodfire at Chapel Field, a family-friendly site in the South Downs National Park and 10 minutes’ drive from the small town of Lewes in East Sussex. Facilities on site may be simple – wooden shacks containing spotless compost loos and powerful showers with bags of hot water – but foodwise, guests are well catered for at Chapel Field. Communal meals are cooked regularly on the wood fire, but if you don’t feel like mingling, you can light up your own barbecue and laze around a campfire under the stars (weather-permitting of course). Another bonus: the South Downs views from the spacious camping field are simply spectacular. And heads up to walkers and cyclists: a track leads directly from the camping field up onto the 90-mile South Downs Way near the Firle Beacon, from where you can hike, bike or follow the trail on horseback. If you’re not all worn out from your day-time rambles, keep activity levels up back on site. See how you stack up playing the Finnish throwing game Mölkky, and then stroll to one of several pubs within 20 minutes’ walk for a post-game pint.

Local attractions

When you’ve a yen for the coast, sand-and-shingle West Quay Beach at Newhaven (20 minutes’ drive) is your closest swimming choice, while Saltdean (half an hour) is something of a hidden spot you may well have to yourselves. There is safe swimming at Cuckmere Haven (25 minutes) where the River Cuckmere meets the sea, and to stay closer to your pitch, Pells Pool is an outdoor lido in Lewes (15 minutes, summer only). Fancy some culturing? The site is half an hour’s stroll from Charleston – once home to boho artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant – which has a programme of events and exhibitions throughout the summer. Stately Firle Place (20 minutes’ walk) has an amazing art collection in lavish apartments as well as carefully tended gardens to explore. Elizabethan-era Glynde Place (10 minutes’ drive) hosts ceramics exhibitions and classical concerts, while the opulent interiors and formal gardens at Herstmonceux Castle (25 minutes) are open for tours. Kids not into heritage? Friston Forest (15 minutes) has lots of gentle trails on which to tire little legs, and Arlington Reservoir (10 minutes) has flat paths around the lake – you might also get lucky and see the resident ospreys in flight.
