Non-electric grass tent pitch
Nestled in the heart of the south downs

  • Peaceful back to basics site in a scenic South Downs village
  • Around a 10-minute walk from the South Downs Way; country pub nearby
  • Woodfired sauna and cold plunge pool for an additional fee
Looking for a simple, peaceful and community-oriented retreat? Based on 33 acres of land in Kingston, a peaceful village in the South Downs National Park, Lovebrook is exactly that. Get back to nature and take in the simple pleasures of the wide-open fields and South Downs views, then sidle over to the country pub a few minutes’ walk down the lane, which has a food menu, outdoor tables and a spacious playground. Lovebrook is part of a multi-faceted ecological community project, so all profits go towards running wellbeing and nature activities for underserved or vulnerable groups. With direct access to the South Downs Way from a 10-minute footpath at the end of the lane, it's an excellent spot for tackling the long-distance trail or shorter walks. The grassy tent pitches are spread over a huge field with rural views and good stargazing (on clear nights). There are plenty of 'home comforts' like composting toilets and washing-up facilities on site, as well as a warm shower set a short walk away from the site. For some TLC, there is a woodfired sauna and a cold plunge pool on site (available for an additional fee). The working farm hosts a market garden on its veg plot throughout the week and you may spot the team hosting groups for the aforementioned nature activities on the land. The site also has a Saturday morning farm shop stocked with items like bread, pastries, flowers and the site's own organic veg; grab a coffee, tea, extra firewood or other essentials. There's also a standing stone on site; feel free to wander up there for good views and ask the team about its story. For an off-ground fire or barbecue (the only type permitted), hire fire bowls and buy log bundles complete with fire starters and kindling on site. There are no bins or recycling facilities, so all rubbish must be taken away. Cars aren't allowed on pitches but you'll be lent a wheelbarrow to shuttle your stuff around. Kingston is a peaceful village with a 13th-century lane, so it’s well-suited to quiet family-friendly breaks. A garden centre is a 15-minute walk away should you fancy a cooked breakfast or at least a coffee and slice of cake.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had a great time camping at Lovebrook. First of all, it's an exciting place with a lot of different projects going on to share the beautiful space and wellbeing of being out in the Downs.

The camping field has a wonderful view up to a ridge of hills. We walked up there - it's a steep climb, but you are rewarded with fantastic views around the Downs, and access to the South Downs Way.

This was my first time camping here, and I really enjoyed it. I'll be back.

Liked: Solitude and peace at Lovebrook

Back to basics camping which was perfect for a one night stay with amazing pub food practically next door.

Great size separate pitches and overlooking the wonderful south downs.

Disliked: No shower but fine for a one nighter with a wash down instead.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The location was really beautiful and the whole campsite was clean. There was no rubbish and no clutter anywhere. It was just a lovely space with vegetables, growing flowers, blooming and friendly, helpful host

Disliked: I wished that the village had a corner shop but there were vegetables and eggs for sale in the farm.

Liked: The location! Everywhere you looked is the view breathtaking. The hills, the mill, the garden.
Also the warmth of the owners and the Lovebrook community is so heartwarming. A group so diverse, all with the same heart for environment and community. Inspiring! When you get a taste of that, and of the real food, you’re sold! Also for beyond your trip. Most gorgeous hikes! Wonderful historic pub! Lewes very relaxed town. Everything! It has been brilliant.

Disliked: At the moment; There is no shower, nor warm water. Not a problem at all for us, good to realize.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had a completely magical stay here. The facilities are basic but if that's your style of camping it's perfection! The setting is the most beautiful we've ever camped in - hiking to the standing stone and up to the top of the Downs was great fun. The mown circles for tents made the stay feel really secluded. The farm shop was lovely and there's a great pub a couple of minutes away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The camping meadow is unbelievably beautiful, long wild grass with 8 mown circles for tents, There was plenty of space between campers and we enjoyed saying hello to everyone else. There is a walk up to the standing stone which offers stunning views and you’re camping at the very foot of the South Downs. We climbed up to watch the sun set and then to watch it rise the next day. An unforgettable experience for the kids

Disliked: Nothing! This place is magical

Down for some simple exploration? Lewes (10 minutes’ drive or accessible with a walk, cycle or bus ride) has a lively selection of cafés and shops for antiques and arts. There’s much more of that sort of stuff in busy Brighton (20 minutes), of course, not to mention the beach and Brighton Palace Pier. Get there by car, a 15-minute train from Lewes, a bus from Kingston, or with a 45-minute bike ride. Where might you get some sublime views of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs? Your options include Cuckmere Haven (25 minutes), a beach with watersports, or the rural beach town of Seaford (20 minutes). Beachy Head (35 minutes) is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain. It’s on the way to Eastbourne (35 minutes), where there are yet more seaside amusements and a huge watersports scene.
