  • Peaceful adults-only back to basics site a mile from Gisburn Forest
  • A 20-minute drive from Settle and half an hour from Skipton
  • Barbecues and dogs welcome; a 10-minute drive from the local pub
What say you to pitching up in a peaceful forest clearing? Primrose Park is an adults-only off-grid site with no facilities on the edge of the Forest of Bowland. A short drive away from the Yorkshire Dales National Park too, it's a particularly appealing base for those seeking back-to-basics getaways filled with rural rambles. This little site is surrounded by green Lancashire lanes and gorgeous forest vistas – Gisburn Forest Hub (10 minutes' drive), a visitor centre with a café, mountain-biking trails and waymarked walks, makes a great starting point for exploring both. You'll also likely want to plan a few trips across the Yorkshire border for outdoor jaunts around Malham or shopping trips in the market town of Skipton (both are about half an hour away). There are no kids allowed at this site, but dogs are welcome so feel free to bring your canine chum along for the ride. The only amenity on site is water for cleaning and washing only – yes, that means that the site has no showers or toilets, and doesn't have a drinkable water supply. For sociable evening eats, you're welcome to set up a barbecue or firepit (off-ground only for both). If the weather has other ideas, bag yourself a table at the nearest pub, which is 10 minutes away by car. The nearest supermarket is in Settle (20 minutes away by car), where there's also a range of eateries from fish and chips to fine dining and all things in between.

Woodland Park non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The area and views

Disliked: Says in the description - minimal facilities, but you'll have access to two unisex toilet/shower blocks. However one of them was locked and the other one didn't have any water so couldn't be used anyway. No, it wasn't cold outside. Also no water at the dish washing facilities at the rear. Site was pitch black, which is not the end of the world but could have mentioned this somewhere in the description. Overpriced for what there is to offer

From the manager: Thank you for your comments, however I would like to say that, As per the terms and conditions on Pitch Up, it clearly states that in winter there are no facilities. This is due to issues with freezing pipes, being an off grid non electric site. As soon as it gets to minus temperatures, the water has to be turned off and the pipes drained to prevent burst pipes. Unfortunately, we cannot just keep turning on the water and re draining it, as and when it freezes as this is not practical. The site is non electric, (again clearly stated on pitch up) therefore there are no external lights and we recommend all visitors bring torches, which again is stated on Pitch Up.

Woodland Park non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nice area.

Disliked: The park was not private, anyone could drive through it since the gate was not closed. It felt like we had stopped on a lay-by. There was no water in the toilets, and the reception area was empty. I did not know where to find someone if we needed assistance. My husband took the dogs for a walk, and the owner's dogs ran up to ours and began nipping at them, which was unacceptable—especially since there were signs everywhere stating that all dogs must be on a lead.

I was very unhappy with our stay, it was expensive, especially considering there was no electricity, water, or functioning toilets. I do not recommend this place.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I’m sorry that you were unhappy with your stay, however it clearly states in the terms and conditions on Pitchup that during the winter they may be no facilities due to freezing water pipes. Unfortunately we are an off grid, non electric site which is also clearly stated on Pitchup.
I have contacted Pitchup and asked for a notice to be displayed more prominently to make sure customers see this information during the winter months. I will pass on your comments about the dog, to the owner.

Local attractions

Itching to get out for some outdoor pursuits? Put your tackle to the test at Stocks Reservoir (10 minutes' drive), a nearby angling spot where you can catch both brown and rainbow trout. (If all this fly fishing malarky is new to you, you can also book a crash course in the basics before getting started.) The local riding stable (10 minutes) is another popular pick if you fancy a spell in the saddle. Up for roaming the hills of the Yorkshire Dales and Eden Valley by rail? Pull up in Settle (20 minutes) and get yourself aboard the Settle to Carlisle railway, a solidly scenic 73-mile line with highlights like the Ribblehead Viaduct and Dent station, the highest in all of England. Steam services are also occasionally laid on for those looking to make the four-hour round trip in style. Other visit-worthy Yorkshire haunts include Skipton (30 minutes), home to a well-preserved castle and narrowboat tours, Bolton Abbey (40 minutes) and the Dales village of Malham (30 minutes), the starting point for hardy hill walkers heading out to Malham Cove and Malham Tarn.
