  • Well-kept, volunteer-run Lancashire campsite with Crompton Moor views
  • Walks and bike rides accessible from the site
  • A five-minute drive from a golf course and 10 minutes from shops
Run by a dedicated team of volunteers, Dog Hill Campsite overlooks Crompton Moor on the outskirts of Shaw in Lancashire. It’s easily accessible from across the north-west, being 10 minutes’ drive from Junction 21 of the M62. The campsite consists of 11 acres of sheltered woodland and gently sloping grassland – the latter with fantastic views to the Lancashire moors – on which you can pick your favourite spot to pitch. There are unisex shower facilities and accessible loos, and car parking is near the pitches. Barbecues are allowed at the pitches, but they must be raised off the ground to prevent damage to the grass; barrows of wood are available for a small charge. You can also buy drinks, ice cream and confectionery from the pop-up tuck shop; anything else you need can be sourced from the supermarket in Shaw (10 minutes’ drive). Robust activities available for everyone at the campsite include – among many others – shooting, axe throwing, archery and orienteering.

In my view ideal for "wildish" camping.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Solitude. I think I was the only one on site. If you want to wild camp but don't want to risk getting found out this is the place to be. You aren't far from civilization but you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere.

Disliked: Nothing. Basic and uncomplicated.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Was secluded

Disliked: Toilets filthy, the hot water taps were all turned off, only cold water, but it was so dirty, firewood full of nails and dangerous, but the toilets were the worst buy, it was filthy.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Is more of a wild campsite, lots of trees to give privacy between pitches and there is lots of freedom to have a fire. The owner is very quick to reply and easily contactable. Nice hot shower too.

Disliked: I had to ask the people in the pitch over from me to turn their music down in the middle of the night, in other campsites there would have been stricter 'quiet time rules' and the owner would have been around to manage it, but that is to be expected with a wilder site like this.
The toilet block could have been a tad cleaner, but perfectly useable.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: -The surrounding area was pretty, with nice walks for me and my dog.
- pot washing station (though didnt use it, so cant guarantee quality)
- There was a park there

Disliked: - Toilets inaccessible and closed off.
- car impossible to get to the campsite due to inaccessible roads.
- Campsite owner never responded to my call or message about firewood, so no fire.
- Litter around the campsite.
- pitches are on a slight hill, so stuff in the tent slowly shifts down it.

I ended up leaving the same day, which was a huge shame.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Quiet but local location. Easy booking and managers available via text for any issues or concerns.

Disliked: Can imagine would be busy in summer periods.

Firewood available but not logs so quick to burn.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: My 19 year old son and I wanted somewhere quiet and relaxing to get away for the night and we definitely found it at Dog hill campsite. Amazingly clean, small yet spacious. There was only 1 other camper on the site so we had room to have a wander round. The pitches are really well laid out, surrounded by high trees to stop wind and noise. The view from the site is breathtaking. The owners were really easy to speak to and seemed friendly when we called them.the pitch was well kept and flat. Fire pits and wood are available upon request. The toilets are basic but clean. The woodland area provided a great setting for breakfast when it rained. The trip was more than affordable and was the perfect setting to just relax. We can’t wait to book again soon.

Disliked: We had nothing at all to complain about, the setting even made the morning rain and fog enjoyable
