  • Adults-only glamping in a shepherd’s hut on the outskirts of Denshaw
  • Pennine Way hikes five minutes’ drive; Ski Rossendale half an hour
  • Ensuite shower room and toilet; kitchen, logburner and outdoor seating
Expansive views of the countryside, traditional pubs within a 20-minute walk, and the Pennine Way five minutes’ drive away. Sounds pretty sweet, right? You can have all that at Cherry Clough Farm, less than a mile outside the village of Denshaw, in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester. And the cherry on the cake? You’ll be glamping in a compact but modern shepherd’s hut with a double bed, an ensuite shower room and a kitchen area with electric hob, oven and fridge. The gravelled outdoor seating area is a good spot for breakfasting or dining alfresco, shaded by tall trees. Need provisions? There’s a farm shop in Saddleworth, not to mention a couple of supermarkets in the town of Shaw (both 10 minutes’ drive). This is an adults-only site (and same-sex couples are welcome), and just the ticket for a romantic break filled with cosy evenings spent by the woodburning stove or in a village pub (there are several in and around Denshaw), sipping a pint of real ale. As for the daytime, there’s heaps to do, in addition to exploring the Pennine Way (which can be accessed from either of two car parks five minutes’ drive away). You can hike 20 minutes to Crompton Moor View Point for far-reaching vistas; wander through Marsden Moor (10 minutes), keeping an eye out for mountain hares, lizards and assorted birdlife; or visit Hollingworth Lake (20 minutes), where an activity centre organises paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Location, stunning views, peace and quiet and then the hut itself - absolutely gorgeous and kitted out with everything we needed for a little break away for our anniversary. Dave greeted us and showed us how things worked on arrival and Beryl came over later on to say hello and let us know there'd been a power cut - it was no issue at all, we headed down to the pub for a bite to eat and by the time we returned, it was back on! Little touches like the Prosecco, cookies, milk and OJ were very much appreciated. We saw a fox early morning but sadly didn't spot any deer. We loved our stay and look forward to visiting again!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything! This is the best glamping I’ve ever been. Lovely quiet location and a short walk through fields into the village to a great little pub with lovely food. The shepherd’s hut was spotless, comfy bed, great shower, cooker, kettle log burner. There were lots of thoughtful little extras, Prosecco, water, orange juice, milk (with extra when we asked), coffee, tea, sugar, free wood and firefighters for the indoor wood burner and outdoor fire pit. The hosts John and Beryl were amazing and so friendly. We saw a family of deer in the next field several times which just made our trip more magical. A perfect end to the summer and would highly recommend.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Beryl and Dave made us feel very welcome upon arrival. The site is very secluded and plenty of amenities are provided. The pub down the road serves great food and the site is near some great walking routes. Got to see some deer walk past the window and watch the sheep grazing. It was too windy for us to use the fire pit but the indoor fire made us feel very toasty.

Disliked: No freezer to make ice cubes, so we drank beer instead of gin and tonics 😂

From the manager: Thank you for the lovely positive review sorry you missed out on your Gin & Tonics

Local attractions

At Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre (20 minutes’ drive), you can take a boat trip through the longest canal tunnel in Britain. A visitor centre illustrates the construction of this three-mile long structure, and there’s also a waterside café where you can relax and take in the views. Just outside Rochdale, Healey Dell Nature Reserve (half an hour) is the spot for those who are into industrial archaeology, with remains of centuries-old mills on the banks of the River Spodden and an imposing Victorian viaduct that you can stroll or cycle on – or under, if you don’t have a head for heights. The qualified instructors at Ski Rossendale (half an hour) will guide you through the basics of skiing and snowboarding, so you can negotiate gentle slopes with confidence. If you want to experience the thrill of sliding downhill without having to worry about staying upright, there is also tubing.
