Whitehough Outdoor Centre
Spacious camping field
Grass pitches
Tent pitches

  • Back to basics camping surrounded by scenic countryside and woodland
  • Walks five minutes’ drive, including Pendle Hill and sculpture trail
  • Pubs within walking distance; dogs permitted on a lead
Families should hotfoot it right now to Lancashire’s Whitehough Outdoor Centre. Operated by Burnley FC in the Community, the centre is a 22-acre outdoor education facility in untamed Pendle countryside. Set in gorgeous Lancashire woodland and fields with spectacular views of fells and valleys, there’s lots of open space on the camping field, with ample room to park your car beside your tent if the weather permits (and if it doesn't, there's a car park). The grass pitches have access to toilet facilities and a designated washing-up area. Spark up a barbecue for more outdoor fun around the campfire with the kids, and if self-catering isn’t your style, there are pubs within a five-minute drive or 20-minute walk from the site. If you want to get stuck into activities, the site may be able to help you pre-book an outdoor activity with an instructor, although they are not always available. For groups of 10+ only, these activities may include crate stacking, obstacle courses, archery, high ropes and orienteering. Some practical bits and bobs now: this is a dog-friendly site, but your four-legged pals must be kept on leads at all times on site and always cleaned up after, please.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location, ample space to pitch tent, the fact there were facilities, clean too. Barley village nearby - good pub food.

Disliked: Ghost town feel to the site: No staff on site, no instructions or clear signposting to facilities. Cars parked on grass next to pitches, despite rules on the contrary - with no staff on site to supervise or enforce.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Plenty of room on this campsite, there are even some picnic benches and little shelters. Nice and quiet site, well situated near Barley and Pendle Hill for walks - there's plenty to explore. There's a clean toilet block and shower. Decent pubs in the village, a short walk up the riverbank.

I didn't (think) I saw any member of staff so I can't comment on that.

Disliked: There's a site rule about parking cars near tents - many sites do this now for several reasons - safety, noise reduction etc - it makes sense. However, there were people on site who, for whatever reason, decided to drive their cars to their tents - so it looks like you can do what you want.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The freedom of the back to basics allowing us to camp with a fire, the site was very clean, plenty of space. Very quiet and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, we would love to head back one day.

Disliked: The only inconvenience but barring in mind the Mrs likes to pack everything except the kitchen sink, was the fact that there’s no access to park the car close for dropping stuff off, albeit this is not a long walk at all.

Liked: I thought the scene was nice, nice workers, overall good experience

Disliked: Just how out the way it is, and was no one there but that’s just due to time of the year

Liked: Nice simple campsite. Helpful staff who greeted me on arrival. Toilet, hot shower, washing up facilities plus a handy sheltered area with a picnic table. Wheelbarrows to transfer gear to your pitch.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Set in a beautiful part of north west England, we had the whole camping field to ourselves, the on site caretaker was very helpful and friendly, and gave us some wood for our camp fire, as we hadn't brought enough (never enough wood for camping fires) it was the night before Halloween and the mist that surrounded the field added to spooky night, on site toilet and shower with plenty of hot water, the field was muddy in parts but thats to be expected at this part of the season, there are plenty of walks you can take, we all enjoyed our short camping trip and all agreed that we will camp here again.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.
