  • Contemporary shepherd’s hut on a farm a 15-minute drive from Blackpool
  • Lancaster and Morecambe 45 minutes’ drive
  • Kingsize bed; well-equipped kitchen; a 15-minute walk from a pub
When Blackpool calls (whether it’s for the Illuminations, a spot of dancing at the glittering Tower Ballroom or a seaside jaunt), one has to answer. However, after a raucous Blackpool extravaganza, you might long to retreat to the peace and quiet of the countryside. If that’s the case, please consider booking a spot at Coppice Huts, on a remote working farm a 15-minute drive from the bright lights of Lancashire’s excitement-filled seaside resort. At the end of a gravel track off the main farm lane, in a grassy paddock, sits a contemporary shepherd’s hut that’s just the ticket for a romantic weekend away. The kingsize bed conveniently folds away to reveal a dining table with comfortable banquettes, and there is a well-equipped kitchenette with a butler sink and gas hobs. If the weather allows, you might prefer to consume your meals alfresco: outside the hut is a picnic table and a firepit with seating. As for sourcing your supplies, there are several supermarkets within a 10-minute drive (in Wesham, Great Eccleston or Poulton-le-Fylde). And if you don’t want to draw the short straw and be the designated driver for the evening, the nearest pub is within walking distance (about 15 minutes), in the village of Singleton, just over half a mile away. In addition to Blackpool and the coast, there are some pretty cool hiking areas around here. The long-distance Lancaster Canal Footpath (20 minutes’ drive) can be walked or cycled – or paddled; while the Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve (35 minutes) is an area of wetlands inhabited by mallards and grebes.

Local attractions

As well as expansive sandy beaches, Blackpool (15 minutes' drive) has not one, but three piers, including the Victorian-era North Pier, with a theatre at the end. Catch a tram to explore the long seafront, travelling south towards the Mirror Ball, catching the other two piers and the thrill rides of Blackpool Pleasure Beach enroute. In Lancaster (45 minutes), a maritime museum on the River Lune has displays on regional seafaring heritage, while Lancaster Castle runs interesting guided tours that delve deep into the building’s long history as a former prison. Williamson Park, on the outskirts of town, is a hilly leafy area with a Butterfly House. A walk along the Stone Jetty in Morecambe (45 minutes) takes you deep – but safely – into Morecambe Bay. Take in the views, then head back to shore to take a selfie with the statue of much-loved locally born comedian Eric Morecambe.
