  • Riverside camping next to Coniston Water in the Lake District
  • A 20-minute drive to Windermere; 15 minutes to Ulverston
  • Spacious pick-your-own grass pitches with mountain and fellside views
Water Yeat Campsite is a pop-up camping field in the Lake District, and is something close to nirvana for water lovers. The Crake river runs through the site and you can paddleboard, canoe or kayak to Coniston Water in less than five minutes. Allan Tarn, just by the site, is a smashing spot for both watersports and nature watching. Swimmers can also take a dip in the river and the gentle slope on the banks makes it great – and safe – for kids to splash around in the water. Please note, however, that they must be supervised at all times. Access to the camping field from the road is easy, with a short drive across a field leading to the parking area. As cars are not allowed on the camping field, it’s safe for children and dogs. The spacious pick-your-own pitches all have an area for barbecues, and you'll have access to portable toilets close by. Local walks from the campsite up to Beacon Tarn (45 minutes) are easy for young kids, and for the more adventurous, The Old Man of Coniston and Wetherlam (you can see them both from the site, by the way) are around a 15-minute drive away. The long-distance Cumbria Way begins in Ulverston (15 minutes) and the whole area is popular with cyclists for its challenging bike routes. If you prefer to explore the Lake District National Park by car, Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere are all less than 45 minutes away, and you can be in a pub serving food and real ale in less than 10 minutes’ drive from the site.

Liked Great campsite in great surroundings and the river and lake at the bottom is brilliant

Disliked The field needed cutting as the grass was very thick and not easy to get around on and the toilets could of done with being emptied

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Very freindly staff, helpful and welcoming,
Clean toilets (as can be for portaloos) and cleaned very frequently with air fresheners and disinfectant spray! Remote location but so much to do! Easy access from car park, river and lake are a blessing in the heat and lovely for adults and kids to play!
Little honesty shop was good with all sorts of essential food and drink and they sell logs for a fire pit too! All in all fantastic little place and highly recommend, we will return!

Liked The campsite is in an amazing location, we were able to access Coniston from the site with our SUP. The toilets were kept very clean and the Honesty shop was great. Communication was fantastic and information provided was detailed.
The atmosphere on site was lovely, everyone seemed to be having a great time. Thanks for sharing your part of the Lakes, can’t wait to return!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely little gem of a site… we’ve been twice now and will definitely return in the future. The owners are welcoming and friendly. The little honesty shop stocks a few essentials like water and firewood, (bring cash). Perfect location for accessing the waterways… 🫶🏼

Disliked Nothing to dislike. Yes, there’s portaloos which can sometimes smell a little, but they’re very clean and well stocked with loo rolls & hand sanitiser. No showers either, but we bought a little solar shower that will do the trick :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Absolutely AMAZING! I expected good things after reading about it but didn’t expect it to be so picturesque, beautiful and clean. The outdoor swimming area is breathtaking and it’s only a very short distance from the campsite. All campers were friendly and it was lovely to meet the owners who take great care of the site. We are going back ASAP 🤩
This campsite is a must 🌳🫶

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nice quiet spot away from the town, but amazing plane spotting views and lovely stargazing opportunities. Pitching and booking was very easy and the stone slab for our BBQ was very appreciated! The portaloos getting cleaned every day was great and the honesty box was a great thing to have and we used it alot!

Disliked Only the lack of shower facilities but we knew this before booking so we knew the risk. Possibly giving directions to the closest facilities? Might help out some people.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The location is amazing as able to launch paddle boards onto the river from the site. Paddle right and end up on a gorgeous tarn, go left and within a few minutes on Coniston. We met Bill who was very welcoming giving advice on local walks, as the site was quiet he said no rush to pack up early the next day which was brilliant as met another day in the water. The honesty shop is great selling pop, water, Crisps, Porridge pots and pot noodles along with firelighters and wood, (Need to take own pit). About a 15 minute drive into Coniston where we had a fantastic meal at The Sun Inn, highly recommend.

Disliked Only thing was the toilets as half were locked out of order and the ones that were in use weren't the best. This wouldn't put me off coming back but my 10 year old daughter might need a bit more persuading.
Just a suggestion but being able to hire fire pit would be helpful too.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I took my sons aged 8 and 12 for their first proper camping trip and picked this spot due to the river and dark skies.

We had a great time and the boys asked to come back before the site was out of sight!

Water year is a belting camp site with nicely sized pitches and it’s very well looked after with the owners on site every day. Windermere is short drive away for places like brock hole so it’s perfectly situated for us.

The honestly shop is amazing as is the bucket of things donated by previous campers, especially for morons like me who may forget things like cutlery!

There was a really friendly welcome and a brilliant overall vibe to the place, I hope we manage to get back before the summer holidays end!!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Flat field, clearly marked pitches with stone slab for a BBQ, clean portaloos, honesty hut with provisions if u run short, friendly staff, easy access to Coniston Water via a small creek, quiet & peaceful with amazing views of Coniston Old Man and surrounding fells.

Disliked Pricey for lack of a shower block for those who want to stay longer than a weekend. Not everyone is in their 20's & can jump into very cold water. Apart from that, nothing to dislike.
