  • Modern shepherd's huts on a peaceful Eden Valley smallholding
  • A 15-minute drive from Penrith; half an hour from Ullswater
  • Rural site with far-reaching views and barbecues provided
If you're on the lookout for comfy Cumbria stays, check out the accommodation at Foxwold Huts and Camping, a peaceful farm site set over eight secluded acres of rural land. Surrounded as they are by green surrounds and finished to a high standard inside and out, these handsome huts make quite the pretty picture and are an all-round brilliant backdrop for stints in the Cumbria countryside. Shepherd's huts have come on quite a bit since pre-industrial times – these models come with barbecue areas, outdoor furniture, plush soft furnishings and comfy beds. They've all been thoughtfully set up far apart from other buildings in a quiet paddock, with green and grassy vistas that are rather lovely to wake up to. They don't come with showers, but separate eco toilet facilities are on hand a short walk away. Those who are in the market for proper rural views have come to the right place: it's part of a smallholding that's taken a variety of animals under its wing over the past few years, including ponies, a flock of sheep and Talulah the resident cow (guests can't actually wander around the farm area but it's certainly a fitting background). There's also a small stream that runs through the site, with fab views over the Pennines to boot. Foxwold Huts and Camping is a mile from Morland village centre, where there's a café, pub and historic parish church. Penrith (15 minutes' drive) is home to the nearest supermarket.

Betty shepherd's hut

Liked: We had a lovely 1 night stay here, myself and my daughter came for a treat!
My daughter loved the fire pit and particularly enjoyed all the animals.
It was very peaceful and a cosy little hut - the lovely hosts also contacted us to prior to arriving to say they had changed our hut to one with a log fire due to the weather becoming more chillier, which was lovely.
We will back at some point to enjoy the lovely peace and quiet again 😊.
Thank you again!

Ruby shepherd's hut

Liked: A lovely welcome on arrival, helpful, friendly and informative. The hut was amazing everything we needed warm and comfortable.
We highly recommend a stay at foxwold huts and will return some day.

Disliked: Just one tiny thing we found was the steps in and out the hut were alittle narrow/small under foot and made it alittle scary coming out of the hut. Overall this didn't particularly affect our stay or upset.

Thomas shepherd's hut

Liked: Absolutely gorgeous stay. Our hosts were so hospitable and welcoming giving clear directions to the site. The shepherds hut was perfect for our needs with a cosy log burner and comfy bed. We felt very at ease and relaxed, exactly what we needed. Puppies, dogs, horses, shooting stars, what more can you ask for!
Such a great family orientated business, would stay there again in a heartbeat. Thanks again!

Thomas shepherd's hut

Liked: What a little gem this place is😍 it’s such a beautiful small site, the little huts & layout of the site are perfect. I loved the fact we didn’t need to bring much as it’s all provided for you. Loved the shelter cooked area to protect you from the English weather. The perfect place to relax and very close to lots of different hiking trails.

What I will say is remember to bring a power bank to charge electricals as there are no plug sockets.

George shepherd's hut

Liked: We had a wonderful couple of days stay here, with our Black Lab, staying in the George cabin. The weather wasn't the best, but the cosy huts were superb in keeping us warm and dry. It was the dog's first time camping, and he loved the grassy area to run around freely on. We accidentally brought all our camping gear, such as a cooker, pots and pans- the kitchen areas come fully equipped, and made our experience so much better, especially with fresh water taps attached to the huts. The compost toilets are the best maintained I've ever seen, and the outdoor shower is really good too. Give it a try!

Joan took care of us, and she was amazing! Such a friendly face, who was more than happy to answer any questions we had. Other reviews mention the hospitality being great, and I couldn't agree more.

It's a beautiful area too, so perfect if you want to drive and do some good hikes or walks. Lowther Castle is stunning, and is a must! Really hope to be back.

Local attractions

This site is in the sweet spot between the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and North Pennines, all of which can be reached in a 20-minute drive or less. Stick Ullswater (30 minutes) in your satnav if you're on the lookout for sailing or canoeing on a big body of water; there's also a 20-mile long walking route that encircles this loveliest of lakes, with several pubs and hikers’ cafés to be found along the way. History-hunters may well want to spend a spell at Lowther Castle (20 minutes), a cracking country house with landscaped gardens. A niche but interesting option is to take a trip to Kendal Quaker Tapestry Museum (35 minutes) to see its 77 intricately embroidered panels. In the event that the kids come down with a case of museum fatigue, a trip to the movies and live shows at the Rheged Centre (20 minutes) may well be just the job. The World of Beatrix Potter (50 minutes) is another safe bet for younger tots, while more mature teens may favour a high trees jaunt at Go Ape Grizedale (an hour and 10 minutes).
