  • Pop-up site on a working fell farm in the northern Lake District
  • Bassenthwaite Lake 10 minutes’ drive; Keswick 20 minutes
  • Views of Over Water; close to cycle routes and Wainwright hikes
A peaceful, off-grid spot for wild camping, Orthwaite Pop-up Campsite sits within sight of Over Water, a feeding place for ospreys, in the northern Lake District. Here, you get a front-row seat to views of the northern fells, including Longlands, Lowthwaite, Great Sca Fell, Knott, Great Cockup, Little Cockup, Meal Fell and Binsey. Indeed, the site’s location is so convenient that you will soon be bagging Wainwrights (as the local peaks are affectionately known) or pedalling down stunning cycle routes. More Wainwrights await at the ‘back o’ Skiddaw’ (20 minutes), as the locals call it. This area has cycling routes such as the Skiddaw Loop, the Lakeland Monster Miles Adventure Cross and the Lakes 100. Added bonus: somehow, big crowds have yet to discover it… Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a lead at all times, since the site is on a working sheep farm with Herdwick and Swaledale flocks. The barn (which once featured on a ‘Top Gear’ episode) has covered picnic tables for rainy spells. Raised firepits and small, raised barbecues are welcome; logs are for sale on site. There are no showers or electricity here, but simple facilities extend to unisex portable toilets, a water source (not for drinking water) and rubbish bins. Please note that there is no public access to the lake, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest owned by the National Trust.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Loads of space, views were amazing and toilets clean. The owners of the campsite even came round to sell camp fires which was really handy! The location was great too, really close to lots of beautiful walks. Will absolutely be coming back.

Disliked: No running drinking water, but not a huge issue as we brought our own.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Amazing site to start the 2025 season off! Pretty standard facilities in regards to portaloo and non drinkable water but it’s clearly stated when booking so you can’t complain.
The owners of the land were amazing, visible throughout the day maintain toilets, emptying bins and just making sure all guests were accommodated for.
Site was a mix of families, couples and groups but plenty of space to have your own pitch without intruding anyone else vice versa.
The views of the lake are amazing with views of Skidaw behind you, as stated in other reviews you can’t use the lake! Cockermouth has a lake about 20 mins away if you’re desperate to do some water sports etc.
The site itself is off the beaten track loads of country lanes once off the M6, but we throughly enjoyed taking in the nature with no mobile signal for a couple days. We will most definitely be back in the near future. Thanks guys!

Disliked: Nowt!

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Fantastic, quiet, peaceful campsite in a beautiful location. We are always on the hunt for wild camp spots and this hit the brief. It’s not overloaded with caravans, meaning you can get that nice peaceful get away and a dose of nature. The owner is lovely and comes round offering fire pits and logs which is a great touch! We’ll be back and recommending!

Disliked: Only thing that would make this spot better would be if you could swim in the lake :)

Liked: Lovely welcome from the owner when we arrived. There was so much space, a huge field and only about 5 groups/couples in it. The toilets were very clean.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The campsite it beautiful with a little lake to look over and plenty room for your tent / car / dogs. The owners were also lovely and came and had a chat with us when they were checking who was in the campsite. Lovely people and it was a lovely campsite. Not too far from Keswick so a quick drive and you’re able to get your shopping in and take yourself a fish and chips back!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great site, lots of space for the children to play, the toilets were kept lovely and clean. The owners are lovely and check on all theirs guests regularly over your stay. You can hire firepits and logs as well.

The most important thing to note is that this is a real back to basics site. It has no shower facilities or drinking water, so you need to take it with you, although the owners do have a supply if you need extra. The WiFi is only available in certain areas of the site, but honestly, with the views, why would you need to be looking at your phone! To access the site you do need to drive down some fairly narrow single track roads, but there are plenty of passing places. If you want to get away and enjoy the lakes this is a lovely site.

Disliked: Nothing.
Keeping our fingers crossed access to the lake is granted for next season so we can get out on the water with our SUP.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We booked this campsite on Friday, when we arrived on Saturday afternoon and looked at field i knew there is 0 chance of me driving car out of that field tomorrow, because field was already muddy, and next day forecast for rain 50% in morning, Had to book another campsite.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. In response to your comments, yes there was some mud at one of the gateways into the site on Saturday. We are a pop-up campsite advertising grass pitches and, following a week of heavy rain in the run up to Storm Lilian that hit the country on Friday morning, inevitably some mud on site was unavoidable. We take exception to your comment “because the field was already muddy”, the mud you refer to was one area of soft ground at the gateway where vehicles had been travelling on and off the site and not the entire field as you make it appear. Had you contacted us on arrival we would have been happy to discuss the situation with you and explain that we had limited bookings on the Friday night to reduce the amount of traffic on the field, that we had opened a second gateway at the other end of the field, and that we were always on hand to help anyone having difficulties entering or exiting the site. We had 42 pitches occupied on Saturday night and everyone was able to get off the site on Sunday, and the majority of those without any assistance at all. Furthermore, we tried to contact you on Saturday evening as we were aware you were not on site and we wanted to make sure that if you were arriving late, we would be on hand to assist you should you need it but you did not answer your phone. We are very sorry you chose not to stay, or even contact us on arrival to discuss your booking but, after all, you booked a grass pitch on a grass campsite after a week of heavy rain in Northern England and, as you said yourself, more rain was forecast so it should not have come as a surprise to you to find some mud on the site.

Local attractions

The area around Bassenthwaite Lake National Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) includes Dodd Wood, whose forests are home to red squirrels, and Lake District Wildlife Park, with birds of prey, primates and farmyard animals. At the Lakes Distillery, you can take a tour of the facilities – complete with a whisky tasting, of course. In the lively market town of Keswick (20 minutes), the riverside Derwent Pencil Museum displays a huge pencil (almost eight metres long) and has a colourful shop stocked with quality art supplies. The town is also the gateway to island-dotted Derwentwater, with its splendid lakeside trails and assorted watery attractions. After visiting the ruins of the 14th-century castle in Penrith (40 minutes), linger a while in the surrounding park, where there’s a playground with a miniature adventure course for the kids. On the outskirts of town are a public pool and several golf courses, plus the Thacka Beck Nature Reserve, where you might spot birds and dragonflies.
