  • Peaceful park with stunning views over Lake Ullswater, Lake District
  • In a wildlife haven near Penrith; a 15-minute walk from Pooley Bridge
  • Play area, football pitch and shop open in season
Squirrel! Did you know that the red squirrel is a very shy critter that mostly won’t be spied if it hears big humanly footsteps (a bit like hobbits)? Sssh: you might just spy one around beautiful Waterfoot Caravan Park, an immensely peaceful place near Penrith in the Lake District National Park. Like the thought of spotting red squirrels in the wild, the look and location of Waterfoot should make one want to pack up and move here with some immediacy. Not only is it in the grounds of a Georgian mansion, with scurrying wildlife all round, but it overlooks gorgeous Ullswater, with steamer cruises on heritage boats, famed walking routes and, with luck – carrying a notepad/sketchpad to note/sketch sightings of glorious daffodils. Waterfoot is a family site over a most viewsome acre of land, with up-to-date showers and toilets, a shop open daily during the season, a laundry room and indoor washing-up areas to combat any Lake District rain. Sans rain, kids have a play area with swings, climbing towers, rocking toys and slide, and there’s a small football pitch for big brothers and sisters. Reception is easily found at the front of the park, so check in and lace up your walking boots to take in the wildlife and walks of some of the prettiest parts of the country – did someone say squirrel…? Pooley Bridge, which has pubs and independent shops, is around a 15-minute walk from the site.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (maximum 8 metres)

Liked: Very well organized site, with friendly staff and lovely clean washroom facilities, with nice hot showers and well thought out. Everything was cleaned regularly and thoroughly. Easy off road access to Pooley Bridge from the site and walks in both direction around the lake from the site. The pitches were nice and level and well maintained, I requested a pitch on the sunny side of the site and was given a pitch on that side, a small detail but nice. The site wasn't full and the team appeared to be spacing out guests which is another positive attention to detail, would stay again without hesitation.

Disliked: Minor, but for a 3 night stay we seemed to be bombarded with emails about online check in etc., more in keeping with an airline or tour operator than a campsite. But, as they have a lot of fixed accommodation it's more understandable.
Maybe better management of the waste area, both recycling and general which were full even on the Thursday after the Easter Bank Holiday, possibly their collection is a Friday which would explain.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to complete this review.

We will pass on your comments regarding the waste area to the Park Manager.

We are so glad that you have enjoyed your stay and found the staff to be friendly and the facilities to be clean and we do hope to see you again soon.

Liked: What a lovely campsite.
Friendly helpful staff.
Lovely walks right from the campsite.
Nice size pitches.
Nice facilities
Our children enjoyed watching the lambs in the fields as well.
Would definitely head back if in the area again.

Disliked: The walks from site aren’t really pushchair friendly.
The only tiny tiny tiny thing is the sign for the campsite can block your view as leaving the site back onto the main road but just have to be careful.

9M fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Location and proximity to lake and restaurants etc. field surrounded by large trees and scenery is amazing, mountains etc. toilets/showers clean. Really enjoyed the low flying jets. Managed to book on a lid week offer. We'll be back.

Disliked: No privacy on pitches, no hedges etc. nar on-site and advertised as open. It wasn't. We stayed Monday/Friday, the bar is shut wed and thurs, not happy by that. Female toilet/showers entrance was behind the block so my wife felt a little uneasy using it after dark.

Local attractions

Waterfalls, walks, watersports, history and heritage are all here: start off with the miles of bridleways around Ullswater, all linked by Ullswater Steamer routes, and take the circular route around Maiden Castle which starts and ends at Waterfoot Caravan Park. The site is surrounded by the Dalemain Estate which has five acres of gardens and swathes of historic parkland; the house and gardens themselves are less than two miles away (the cream teas are heartily recommended). At least a day must be had on and around Ullswater, the Lake District’s second biggest lake, for a trip on Lady Dorothy or one of the other steamers; a spot of sailing, diving or boating, or a scale up Helvellyn, England’s third highest mountain and lying at Ullswater’s south (stagger to Glenridding village afterwards for refreshments). Wildlife including red deer and those red squirrels can be spotted in many Lake District woodlands and fells, but to maximise your chances of a sighting, scurry along to the flagship red squirrel reserve at Whinlatter Forest near Keswick, where there’s also a red squirrel trail with a visitor centre and rope bridge..
