Lowther holiday park
Lowther castle

  • Dog-friendly site on a private, wooded riverside in the Eden Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Ullswater and 15 minutes from Lowther Castle
  • Bar and shop; fly fishing available in the river Lowther
Whether it’s an active or a lazy Lake District getaway you have in mind, Lowther Holiday Park will get the opening scenes rolling splendidly. What might these scenes look like? Well, when you’re not unwinding in the site’s 40-acre managed woodland in the Eden Valley or paddling in the river running through the site, you might be out boating on Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge 10 minutes’ drive away. Have a gander at the medieval ruins of Lowther Castle & Gardens, which lie at the end of a quiet 40-minute woodland walk from the site. Then, recharge your batteries at one of the period pubs in Askham, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site. Those of you who prefer a picnic lunch will be pleased to know that Lowther Holiday Park has a fully-stocked mini market, which also supplies essential camping equipment and gas. There’s a family-run bar on site with outdoor entertainment in the summer and Sky Sports for those who can’t bear to miss a match day. Down a mile-long, newly-laid and private tarmac drive lined with mature trees, this place really feels like a wildlife haven. The long Lowther river snakes through the site, so wade around the shallows and keep your eyes peeled for native red squirrels, wild rabbits and birds. You wouldn’t guess that junction 40 on the M6 is just 10 minutes’ drive away. Access to the site is through the scenic village of Eamont Bridge.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet site with some lovely walks and facilities big shower spaces and bathtubs which made keeping four small kids clean so much easier it’s so hard juggling in small cubicles these were amazing.lovely and clean.staff lovely

Disliked: The distance from the camping pitches to the toilets and washing seemed silly to have them in the middle of the statics and caravans when they have there facilities but wasn’t a big problem

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location was great with lots of lovely walks. The site was quiet in the evenings so children could settle early.

Disliked: Our pitch was quite far away from the toilet block, with 4 children this did prove tricky. There was also no hot water for washing up.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Friendly staff, facilities clean, nice shop with freshly made cakes and pastries.

Disliked: The pitch was under the trees which had a lot of crows nests which meant you couldn't sit outside because of getting crows droppings.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: - location. Stunning location sorounded by beautiful woodlands and a beautiful lake. Great for hiking, or trail running which I did.

Lake- is absolutely stunning

Toilet blocks- spotlessly clean, lots of showers and toilets and even a bathtub which was a nice surprise.

Castle- only a short walk away and a must if you have children.

Disliked: -As the title says, NO FISHING. We booked this holiday for that reason as my husband as disabilities so can't get round far so he stays back at the site fishing why I explore and do day trips with the children. He went to the office for a permit to be told, you are not allowed to fish, something about observations, and it's being policed to make sure no ones fishing, so he was not happy about that. This should really be updated on the pitch up description as I feel this is the selling point, the lake and fishing, so false advertising, and alot of unhappy people.

The birds- now I know you can't do anything about birds, it's wildlife but to put the touring pitches under those big trees which are full of crows nests is ridiculous, the bird poo (see pics) which absolutely covered our caravan in just a couple of days was absolutely disgusting and ridiculous, it went all over our water bowser, on the blue pipe into the drinking water so we could no longer even use our bowser and had to do multiple trips to the tap instead. the noise from morning until night was ridiculous and if you thought you'd get peace at night because the birds are sleeping you'd be wrong. This is when there's that much movement in all.the nests, all the twigs and sticks from the nests just bounce off your caravan roof all night, keeping you awake. It seemed at lot worse at our pitch 8A as we was directly under 18 big nests ( yes I counted them) so I would avoid this pitch if you're going soon, as the caravans at either side didn't seem to get as much poo as us. We asked to be moved on the second day to be told "you can't as we've got 15 more tourers coming, so there's none free, and we was also the 3rd person to ask be moved that morning" this was false and they could have moved us, the top 2 pitches away from the nests stayed empty for our entire stay, so they could of easily moved us. I think for future, even just closing the 8A pitch in nesting season as it's directly under them would be so much better and save a lot of unhappy customers.

Through all of the bad points, would I stay again. YES. But definitely not in nesting season, maybe summer time, and when fishing is back allowed. The woodlands around the site, and the castle are what's really beautiful about this place and the reason I will be revisiting.

Liked: Lovely site with loads to do. Parks, paddling in the river, plenty of walks from the site we loved to the walk up to lowther castle.
The shop/bakery is also excellent and would highly recommend, pub on site too with ping pong table which my children loved. All staff friendly.
The site was also very clean and well maintained. We had no issues at all everything ran very smoothly. Toilets clean with hot water in the showers.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The showers and toilets are very clean and well maintained. There is plenty to do close to site. We had a lovely walk up to lowther castle and the park was a decent size for kids. Only a 10 minute drive in to pooley bridge.
Staff were very friendly and the shop was reasonably priced and well stocked.
We will definitely be back!

Local attractions

Set an early alarm, because you’ll want plenty of time to explore the Lake District’s second-largest lake. There’s a 20-mile path around Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge (10 minutes’ drive). So, take it all in on foot, or opt for the boat hire and cruises if you’d like to cover as much ground (or rather, water) as possible in one go. Haweswater Reservoir (half an hour) isn’t as busy as Ullswater, making it a great pick for more peaceful days out hiking. Penrith (10 minutes) will pick up the pace once again; there’s the popular Beacon Hill hike for those not done with the outdoorsy adventures and a museum and 14th-century castle for those interested in a slice of history. As Lowther Holiday Park is so close to the A66 and the M6, it’s not so tricky to take a day trip to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (45 minutes), Hexham (an hour and 15 minutes) or Barnard Castle (an hour and five minutes) either.
