  • Peaceful Cumbria farm site about 10 minutes' drive from the M6
  • Just outside Lake District National Park, 20 mins' drive from Keswick
  • Barbecues allowed; Michelin-starred gastropub five minutes' drive
Heading out for your fix of rural life is pretty straightforward when you stay at Hollybank Farm – this Cumbria countryside site is only about 10 minutes’ drive from the M6, so it should be simple enough to access wherever the motorway brings you from. (That location also makes this place a good one to consider if you’re looking for a stopover spot on a longer motorway journey north or south…) On site, it’s a fairly simple setup with the emphasis on the peaceful atmosphere rather than fancy facilities. You will, however, have access to a portable toilet and you’re welcome to bring along a barbecue to cook your meals on. Supplies for the grill can be picked up in Penrith (10 minutes’ drive) – although it’s also handy to note that there are several country pubs around nearby for meals as well (including the Michelin-starred Dog and Gun Inn). This Cumbria location is a good one for heading out into the Lake District National Park – places like Ullswater, Blencathra and Skiddaw are all within easy reach and it’s about a 20-minute drive to Keswick.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: It was a very quiet site, only 2 other couples there. Managed to book last minute. Easy to get to from the M6 and a lovely sunset.

Disliked: Having been to our fair share of festivals and wild camping sites, we're very used to simple facilities. There were two portaloos on site which were quite honestly, disgusting. They looked like they hadn't been cleaned for weeks and smelt like they hadn't been emptied for weeks either.

The field also had some farm animal poo (not the end of the world as we were in a campervan but something to be aware of if pitching a tent.)

For £26 I think it's very overpriced considering it's a field with disgusting portaloo's. I've stayed at fully serviced campsites for less.

Disliked: Two portaloos that were filthy, grass too long so got very wet walking to the loo. And literally a field. £26. A night for this

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A very basic campsite but perfectly good and comfortable for 1 night. We stopped on our coast to coast cycle route and it was perfect. There is a toilet, water taps and a small bin but otherwise it's just a field in the middle of nowhere which suited us great, it is very peaceful and quiet. There's also a few lovely pubs within cycling/driving distance.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Cheap, convenient location, does what it says on the tin!

Disliked: One of the portaloos was so wobbly that it could have fallen over. Unclear where water tap was. Ground near entrance very muddy but rest of field was okay.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The site is in a convenient location, and is easy to find.

Disliked: A bit too basic, the grass was quite long, and the toilets are Portaloos, but they weren't very clean, and so un-level that they rocked when used. Slightly more expensive than better alternatives too.

Local attractions

The Lake District National Park is surely calling when you stay here – and there are plenty of ways to answer that call. Intrepid hikers may like to tackle peaks like Blencathra (20 minutes’ drive) and Skiddaw (35 minutes) while those in search of something more leisurely stop in at Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens (15 minutes). As for the lakes themselves, you can get to Ullswater in about 20 minutes for a cruise or some watersports, or head further afield to Bassenthwaite and Thirlmere. And of course there’s also the option of stopping in Keswick (20 minutes), on the banks of Derwentwater, for a waterside walk, a canoe trip or a show at Theatre by the Lake. Puzzling Place and the Derwent Pencil Museum are good picks if it’s a damp day. It doesn’t all have to be about the Lake District here – there’s also the option of crossing the M6 to the the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or heading north to Carlisle (half an hour) to visit the castle and Tullie House Museum or ride the scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway.
