What customers say

This is a beautifully located campsite, praised for its stunning scenery and proximity to Scafell Pike and Wastwater. Visitors highlight the friendly and helpful staff, well-maintained and clean facilities, including hot showers, and the well-stocked on-site shop. Pitches are described as spacious and flat, and the site is noted for its quiet atmosphere, making it ideal for walkers and families. Nearby pubs and cafes are also a popular addition. While some mention limited Wi-Fi and phone signal, many find this a positive aspect for a peaceful break.

Herdwick 2 bedroom static caravan (no pets)

Liked The caravan site was Great.
Enjoyed our 3 day stay very much.
The couple who was in the shop was very good helping us if we had any help issues required.
The Caravan ( Herdwick ) was superb with all the mod cons and had everything we needed.
The only thing we had to supply was the towels.
It was a very quiet site and the views was stunning surrounded by mountains.
The pub the Strand Inn was within walking distance from the caravan site.
Very nice quaint village pub with atmosphere.
Fully recommend this Caravan site.
Hope to return next year

Disliked The only thing the site could do with is lighting along the path to the Caravan as at night it is pitch black.
Although in having said that we used our torches on our phones to see a bit

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked Large pitch with plenty of space, some privacy with hedging and easy to get to. Access to local walks and plenty of information on the local area. Clean toilet and shower block, shop at reception with a good stock of essentials. A pub with good food 2mins away. Really good site, set in beautiful surroundings, would 100% return. Also the sawmill farm shop which is only a short 10 min walk from the campsite is fantastic, good selection of food, gifts and cakes.

Disliked Refuge store close to pitching area. A few cats kept coming to our tent trying to get to food etc

Friends in a caravan had WiFi but we didn’t on the pitches.

Disliked Electric hook up was a bit too far away…. Had to move up a bit on to the grass. But it looked like work was going on so may be sorting.

Local attractions

Whether you’re climbing, canoeing or just ambling gently around with picnic in backpack, the Wasdale valley is a pretty pleasant place for a Lake District break. The valley is over 10 miles long if you fancy a full day’s historic hike, starting from the village of Wasdale Head, the start of the Three Peaks Challenge and the former home of Cumbrian pub landlord Will Ritson, whose tall tales led to the still-going-strong Biggest Liar Competition. One of the tiniest churches in the land, St Olaf’s, is at Wasdale in its ‘Viking fields’: Wasdale was originally settled by Norse farmers and the beams in the church are rumoured to be from Viking longships. Climbers can get to Scafell Pike and Great Gable from Wasdale Head, but walkers can continue along the valley length down to the village of Gosforth, which has the biggest Viking Cross in England at the Grade I-listed St Mary’s Church. Finally, fancy the beach? The Cumbrian coast at Seascale is seven miles from Church Stile Farm (walkable, you might reckon), with miles of sandy beach leading to the Lake District’s only coastal village, the fishing village of Ravenglass.
