  • Cliffside site on a family-run smallholding on the Cumbria coast
  • A 25-minute drive to Port Haverigg; direct access to the coastal path
  • Firepits and wood available; barbecues permitted; fresh eggs available
Live the coastal way for a while on the Cumbria coast… a cliffside side on a family-owned smallholding, Selker is the right place to go if coastal walks, watersports and steam train trips are up your alley. From this site, you’ll be on the edge of the Lake District National Park with direct access to The Cumbria Coastal Way and watersports in Port Haverigg 25 minutes’ drive away. Here, you’ll be signing up for a platter of sublime views too, as the site is at the mouth of the river Annas with views of the Lake District and the Isle of Man if it’s a clear enough day. As it’s a cliffside site with agricultural machinery, younger children must be closely supervised, and dogs are not permitted due to the rescue cats homed by the site. While you may want to start off the day with your own barbecue breakfast and fresh free-range eggs laid out by the site’s little ladies, the evening may be just as laidback as the site provides firepits and wood. As this is a small site, there are simple facilities including toilets and a water supply; there is also a cold-water washing-up area However, you’ll be within reach of more than just castles, steam trains and fells, as this site is one mile from a train station and 10 minutes’ drive away from Bootle’s village shop, café and 15 minutes from a pub serving bar meals. Millom, another local town, has many more venues for dinner or takeaway and places for a good old shopping spree.

Liked: Lovely site !! Beautiful views !! Good toilet facilities.
Owner is lovely camp fires available with wood and fire light at cheap prices.
Accept car camping which a lot of other sites do not. On a working farm so animals are out which I loved would 100 percent recommend and definitely will be staying again

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: An absolutely fab site, it does exactly what it says on the tin, simple and straight-forward. Beautiful surroundings, especially waking up next to the sea every morning, and sleeping with the sound of the waves. It's 30 mins walk up to Bootle station, then you get north or south to different parts of the West Lakes, so a decent base for exploring. Toilets aren't the portaloos (as in the photos) but a new concrete block with a sink for washing up too. All in all, cracking camp site.

Disliked: Obviously a simple shower would be great, but I just had a few dips in the sea, and then rinsed off the salt with water from the tap. As a solo walker, I had a few slightly ropy interactions with the cows in the next field, but fully to be expected (it's the countryside, and no comment on the site itself).

Liked: Incredible site - description here doesn’t do it justice. Stayed for a week and would happily still be there.

The beach is a minute’s walk away; owner is as friendly as you could want and on hand with eggs and logs, but also not constantly in your face, so it’s a good place to get some peace and quiet. On a clear day, you can eat your tea looking at the sunset over the Isle of Man.

The blue portaloos on photos from older reviews are long gone and replaced with a proper brick building with two spacious and scrupulously clean toilets where you’ll need a torch at night. As stated, water is cold - might have been a challenge keeping the kids smelling reasonable for a week here, though I noted that there are bats and balls and other things provided in the toilet block. Payment for eggs and logs was by a link rather than cash, which was handy; decent phone signal on site.

Access road won’t trouble you unless you arrive by skateboard; my bog-standard saloon with impractical 19-inch rims was absolutely fine, and you’ll encounter worse potholes on most British roads. As noted in other reviews, it is a fair way to large towns; also worth filling up on petrol if you happen to stop at a supermarket anywhere since local options are few and comparatively expensive.

There are a few flatter pitches but most up by the wall overlooking the sea are on a slope, so worth making sure you know how to level out a sleeping mat before setting up if you don’t want to wake up at the bottom of the hill. Weather comes and goes, and wind can pick up and shift direction. Mildly, mildly midgey after rain but they respect Skin So Soft and camp fires.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location was stunning, as was sun set. Toilets were decent, but if they changed 1 toilet Into a shower that would be brilliant!

Disliked: The road in was very rough and I'm pretty sure it has damaged the underneath of my car!

Very bad night's sleep due to the wind coming off the sea and shaking my tent all night! Not the sites fault tho obviously, but something to consider if you go in poor weather.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Amazing location- you're camping almost on the beach as the farm overlooks it. Quite secluded aswell which is just what we wanted. Falling asleep listening to the crashing waves was so soothing.

The owners were lovely and brought us some firewood on request - only £6 for a massive bag of logs/kindling (fire pits provided). Also offered us extra tent pegs if we needed as it was windy.
The toilets were clean and well stocked with tissue/paper towels/soap and were proper toilets in a proper building. No lights though so make sure you bring torches.

Thanks very much for having us would definitely come again.
