  • Small, friendly site on a farm at the edge of the Lake District
  • A 20-minute drive from Ulverston and Coniston Water
  • Dog-friendly and back to basics; barbecues welcome
Sturdy Bank is a small, friendly site on a farm in a quiet Cumbria location just on the edge of the Lake District National Park, five minutes’ drive from Broughton-in-Furness and Kirkby-in-Furness and 20 minutes from the market town of Ulverston. This laidback site is within easy reach of some of the Lake District’s top attractions: the nearest lake is Coniston Water, 20 minutes’ drive away, and it’ll take you less than half an hour to get to the Old Man of Coniston, Windermere and Beatrix Potter’s old stamping ground at Hill Top. And although the national park is worthy of many a visit, it’s also worth making time to head down to the coast, about 10 minutes away (the nature reserve at Sandscale Hawes is a particularly fine choice). This is a simple site with just basic facilities provided: it’s got a clean water supply and portable toilets that are cleaned regularly. You're welcome to set up barbecues for outdoor eats. Otherwise, Broughton-in-Furness has places to pick up food or settle in for meals and drinks, and there’s a more extensive choice over in Ulverston.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: A couple of days mid-week, at the very end of the season, meant the site was super quiet, and I had my choice of where to park-up the camper van. Plenty of level spots and amazing views in every direction.
I also found the footpath across the fields, which gets you to the (very friendly) pub in just a few minutes, and avoids roads altogether.
It might be "back to basics" but that's often when camping is at its best.
Loved it!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Spacious level site with clean portaloos dotted about.

Disliked: Exposed area. Very expensive for a site with minimal facilities. A purpose built shower, toilet block would justify the price.

From the manager: Thank you for your review Linda.
Our Campsite prices are in line with all other Campsites in the area, offering the same facilities. When you booked through pitchup, the site information and reviews make it very clear what the facilities are.
As we allow you to choose your own pitch, you unfortunately choose to pitch your tent in an exposed area of the field.

Great site with friendly staff and fab views.

Liked: Lovely scenery, clean portaloos, close to a good pub. We had the whole field to ourselves which was good for us.

Disliked: Very basic for the price you pay, we have paid less for sites with good facilities. Ground was rock hard.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The views were amazing! It was in a very peaceful area with pretty quick access to the southern Lakes. Campsite was as described, with well maintained portaloos and a sink for washing up.

Disliked: Not a huge problem, but we missed the turning at first as it’s off a busy, windy road onto a small farm lane - just something to watch out for!
