Pitch among the greenery

  • Peaceful pop-up site with stunning Lake District National Park views
  • Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre 15 minutes’ drive; Windermere 20 minutes
  • Showers available; pubs and shops 10 minutes’ drive
Tucked away down a quiet farm track 10 minutes’ drive from the rural Cumbrian village of Staveley, the pop-up site at Frost Hole is a peaceful retreat for anyone seeking simplicity and solitude. With wild pitches set against the stunning backdrop of mountains and fells in the Lake District National Park, it’s a gorgeous spot in which to unwind and reconnect with nature. This off-grid site is basic but spectacular, with grass pitches, showers, toilets and space to park your car. With lots of space, you can pitch up wherever you fancy; you’re pretty much guaranteed blazing sunsets on clear evenings and – thanks to the lack of light pollution – stellar celestial displays after dark. Frost Hole is positioned on the crossroads of several scenic footpaths, bridleways and mountain biking trails for anyone wanting to explore locally. A bakery, cafés, pubs and shops are all in Staveley, from where you can hop on bus number 555 to explore the Lake District, or take the train to Kendal and Windermere from the station.

What customers say

This campsite offers spectacular mountain views and a peaceful, scenic setting, ideal for hikers and wild swimmers. Visitors consistently praise the friendly and helpful hosts, Chloe and Linden, and highlight the exceptionally clean facilities, particularly the hot shower and portaloo. Its excellent location provides easy access to Windermere and Ambleside. Some found pitches uneven and rocky, and one mention was made of noisy campers on one night, but the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive with many planning return visits.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We loved our stay at Frost Hole. Amazing location! The campsite is clean and tidy! Very easy to find following the sat nav! The shower is amazing! The portaloos are very well kept and the nicest smelling I’ve been in haha. There is fresh drinking water to use whenever! Chloe is very friendly and makes sure you’re ok the following day and is at the bottom of the hill if you need her.

Disliked Arguing with my girlfriend Katy on who was going to open the gates to drive through haha. We didn’t not like anything! Our stay was great!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I really enjoyed my two night stay at Frost Hole. Lyndon and Chloe are friendly hosts, happy to chat and help if needed. They're also really busy so equally, they'll leave you to enjoy your stay in peace. Peace is what Frost Hole offers in spades. Pitches are few, very well spaced and the location itself feels remote and tranquil. The views from the site are gorgeous. You could be in the middle of nowhere.

Staveley isn't far away for a little outdoors retail therapy, and various food and drink options. Wilf's Café is legendary.

Staveley is something of an outdoor activity hub and there's running, biking and hiking on your doorstep at Frost Hole.

The thrumming South Lakes hotspots of Bowness, Windermere and Ambleside are within a half hour drive.

I think Frost Hole suits active families, individuals and small groups - say, backpackers, cycle tourists and car campers - very well for short stays.

Disliked Not really a dislike but visitors should be aware that this is a basic campsite with "just enough" home comforts. Toilets, warm shower (kept meticulously clean) and drinking water sufficient for the few pitches.

No WiFi and very limited mobile phone reception. These last points, you might consider, a bonus for an undisturbed break.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Idyllic small, quiet and basic campsite in a stunning location with fantastic sunsets and sunrises with a giant tree for shade in the hot summer.

Swallows, pheasants, chickens, bats and couple of midges.

Walk down a footpath full of blackberries.

Kind and polite owners made the 4 days memorable.

Showers was a plus and was heard to be having issues but always working when we needed it. As we liked basic camping a shower was a treat.

Disliked Portaloos smelt by the end of the week but owners regularly tried to clean as much as can.

Simple sink for grey water (pot washing) would be helpful but not vital.

Local attractions

Hikes directly from the pitches head up to rugged Brunt Knott (25 minutes’ walk), or you can try for the peak of Kentmere (nearly two hours). A longer ramble leads to Brant Fell Viewpoint (2.5 hours) for views over Windermere, or you can take the kids on gentle strolls around the lake’s shoreline instead (20 minutes’ drive). Once down by the lake, pop into Windermere Jetty Museum (also 20 minutes) to see the displays of historic boats before hopping onto a steamer for a cruise on the water. You can book dinghy sailing at Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre (20 minutes), or try kayaking and windsurfing from Hodge Howe Watersports Centre (15 minutes). Most kids love the interactive Peter Rabbit-themed exhibits at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (20 minutes), and you can also visit Potter’s former home at National Trust-owned Hill Top (45 minutes). If you’d rather not stray so far from home base, feed the calves and Herdwick sheep at the Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes).
