  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (premium)

Liked: Lovely quiet site, toilets and showers had just been refurbished so were very clean. Firepits were great and also the on site shop does essentials fresh bread etc

Disliked: Only downside was paid for a pitch with WiFi but signal wasn't great. We didn't need it anyway and 5g still worked

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: Tranquil location, friendly staff, nice little shop on site for the essentials.

Disliked: Pitches were quiet close together without a lot of room for the kids to play without getting in some ones way. No fault of the owners, just something to be mindful of if you’ve got young ones who like a kick around with a football or like to play catch!

Terrace electric optional grass campervan pitch

Liked: Great view.
Communal area.
Peaceful site.
Site rules are clear and keep everyone having a peaceful time.
Clearly striving to maintain the 9+/10 rating.

Disliked: Investment in shower block is great but incorrect sensors on showers drives you mad (as well as dribble mode if people are washing up?) and the partition in the shower cubical means there’s little space to dry off and to dress. Too much technology to save water.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (premium)

Liked: Beautiful setting. All you could hear were birds and bees. Immaculate site immersed in nature.
Modern toilet and shower facilities. Washing up area and communal white goods for all to use. Communal tent area with benches and games for the kids was a really nice touch. The site in mostly phone blackout but efficient free wifi available.
We had an issue with our electric hook up which was resolved by the site staff very promptly.
We stayed on a premium pitch which had loads of space, fire pit and picnic bench included.
Well stocked shop as there’s nothing locally and map info available for walks off site. You can even pre order warm pastries for breakfast. Local pub just over a miles walk. Will absolutely be back!

Disliked: That we couldn’t stay another night! And hadn’t booked a hot tub yurt!

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: very clean site, friendly staff - very welcoming and helpful.
lovely shop on site selling all essentials including fire pit hires and wood/marshmellows!
great wifi

Disliked: on our pitch it was hard to put tent pegs into ground due to stones being further down however, with some adjustments was manageable. however, witnessed other people putting their tent pegs in super easy (they were lower down)

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: Small, peaceful site. Nice setting. Generous sized pitches. Good bathroom facilities. Friendly helpful manager. Relaxed atmosphere. Nice shelter for poor weather days. Good WiFi at pitch. Will return.

Disliked: Would be helpful to have quiet hours say after 11pm to discourage the group next door from talking past midnight.

A slate or stone for the bbq would help protect the grass.

Would prefer later check out so you can enjoy the full weekend. As the lakes are pricey.

Better advertising of offerings such as e-bike hire on pitch up so we can plan in advance.

Lodge

Liked: The site was very clean and quiet.
Pods warmed up quickly. Very simple but just what you needed.
Liked that the pods had their own kitchen.
Bed in pod was very comfortable.
Site was clean and well maintained although

Disliked: Not any Dislikes but a couple of suggestions.
Being 5ft 3 the bed was slightly high and I had to jump to get onto it and wouldn't have been alot of room for 2 people to sleep in.
Maybe have a used book collection.
New pillows needed.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
