  • Peaceful site on a farm five minutes' drive from Bassenthwaite
  • Spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw
  • Distillery and wildlife park within a few minutes' drive
Let’s face it, if you’re off to the Lake District you’re likely to be looking for lots of chances to look at lakes. So put a big tick in that box for Irton House Farm, a peaceful place where watery views can be had without even leaving your pitch. And it’s not just any old lake that forms the backdrop here: you’ll be looking out over Bassenthwaite, one of the area’s largest and loveliest (and in a region of pretty stiff competition too). Being a farm site, you’ll share those views with the resident sheep and chickens, but around the sizeable site there's plenty of space to relax or to run about and play games. (Not outdoor-games weather? Retreat to the games room for pool and table tennis.) As scenic as that outlook is, you’ll not be wanting to limit yourself to just the one lake, so it’s handy that there are plenty more within easy reach. Buttermere, Derwentwater and Crummock Water are all within a half-hour drive, as is the Solway coast if you fancy a blast of sea air with your aquatic views. Getting out for a walk or a bike ride is pretty straightforward on local paths, and you can safely get all mucky knowing that a bike wash and free heated shower block await your return. Post-activity pubs and grub can be had five minutes away in Bassenthwaite or with a slightly longer drive to Cockermouth.

Paddock electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Stunning view and excellent facilities. The lady who welcomed us was very friendly.

Disliked: That others in the camp can play music. It was at a respectable level but would prefer if there was none played at all and can just enjoy the sounds of nature.

Orchard electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: Great sized pitches, amazing views and clean facilities. I felt safe and the site was quiet and relaxing! Designated car parking was great too on the yard. Pitches were well kept and spaced out so didn’t feel cramped with other campers around.

Disliked: Could have had more showers/toilets for the amount of pitches but generally no problems having to wait to use the facilities!

Paddock electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The incredible lake views! Especially early morning in the mist it felt like we were in Lord of the Rings.
The lovely clean loos, showers and washing up area.
Other campers really friendly.
Watching the baby lambs leap and play.

Disliked: Even though they were lovely and clean, there weren’t really enough loos and showers for all the campers. 2 loos and 2 shower/loo combos total.
Sadly didn’t get to chat to the owners as it was lambing season and they were round the clock busy which was totally understandable.

Paddock electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The owner was very friendly and showed us to the pitch on arrival. She explained the layout and also advised we could buy eggs and logs if required.and use the games room. The location had a tremendous view over Bassenthwaite lake The toilet block was clean and warm.

Disliked: I had to wait quite a long time to use the toilets / showers as there are only two showers and two separate toilets which is fine when the site is not full.

Local attractions

It’s all about getting outdoors around here – there are walks galore through the area’s stunning scenery (not just lakes but also fells, forests and mountains). Routes are around for all abilities, from accessible ‘miles without stiles’ walks through to scrambles up Skiddaw (the 931-metre peak is 20 minutes’ drive from the farm). Put your boots aside for a while to favour other activities – head to Whinlatter Forest Park (20 minutes' drive) for mountain biking, Derwentwater (20 minutes) for kayaking and trout fishing, or Cockermouth Golf Club (10 minutes) for a round or two. If you’ve got the kids with you, you may like to take a trip to the Lake District Wildlife Park; if not, a dram at the Lakes Distillery or a tour of Jennings Castle Brewery may be on the cards. And of course it’s always worth making a point of visiting the Derwent Pencil Museum, 15 minutes away in Keswick.
