  • Family-run site with scenic views across farmland and fells
  • A 15-minute drive to the city of Carlisle and 30 to the Lake District
  • Supermarkets, restaurants and a swimming pool a 25-minute walk away
For views of fells, farmland and fields make Camping at Cardewlees your next base for a break – this family-run site looks out over splendid Lake District scenery including Carrock Flat Top, High Pike and Skiddaw… Whether you plan on having hardy hikes or gentle jaunts over the hills, they’re easy to reach as the park is about a 30-minute drive from the northern end of the Lakes. It’s also a 25-minute walk to the small but perfectly formed village of Dalston if you’re not wanting to amble far for a supermarket and restaurants, and as the community’s a regular Cumbria in Bloom winner there are sure to be a fair few flower displays to ooh and ahh over… The village’s play areas and public swimming pool mean you might even be able to tempt kids along for a wander too – the river setting is excellent for rambling. The Cumbria Way ends at Carlisle and runs through Dalston, so you could join the 70-mile long-distance trail here (or just stop off for a stay at Camping at Cardewlees during an epic walk from one side to the other). Cycle paths are also strewn through the local landscapes for long or short rides. Before you head off for the day, fill up on breakfast prepped by the site’s owners; just check it’s available when you arrive. Amenities include a shower and regularly cleaned unisex toilets.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The Animals, the views beautiful quiet base for exploring the local area easy check in. I love simple pleasures so this working farm was perfect for us.

Disliked: The grass was really long and nearly burnt out my clutch reversing van onto pitch. Not an issue for the experienced caravanner but I'll need to stick with hard ground pitches for now

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The site is not in great but the people are friendly.

Disliked: At the time of our stay one toilet block was closed which meant there was a large que for the pod block. Showers were cold and water pressure very poor..

Enclosed fully-serviced hardstanding pitch (hot tub)

Liked: We stayed here April 2025 in the enclosed pitch with a wood fired hottub. We had an amazing time! The enclosed pitch was a game charger with the dogs able to run around freely and safely 🐶. The setting was beautiful and peaceful with the stunning countryside all around. It was lovely in the morning to have our breakfast outside with the view of the cows, even though it is a working farm it was so peaceful 🐖🐑🐄🚜. One of the highlights was the wood fired hottub, it was a treat to sit and unwind under the stars in the evenings.
The pitch itself had everything we needed. It was clean, well kept and had a lovely rustic feel.
All in all, it was a great experience. The 3 hours journey was definitely worth it! Us and the dogs loved our weekend here and will definitely be back 🫶🏼

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nothing, the campsite was a disgrace

Disliked: Everything.
The campsite was disgusting
Shower not working cold
Toilets absolutely filthy with urine on the floor and toilet seats lying on the floor with shit on it.
The sink to wash dishes was filthy with food waste.
The chemical waste had not been cleaned and was absolutely stinking the whole “campsite”
Glad I was only there to put my head down for a few hours, absolutely filthy and disgusting

From the manager: We are in the process of renovating the main site toilet blocks.

As we aren't particularly busy at the moment. We asked campers to use the toilets near the pods. I totally appreciate that the standard of the toilets isn't acceptable as they weren't in use. I'm wondering if the sign bles off the door during your short stay.

The wash up area is cleaned every day. I'm sorry if another camper left food waste in the sink. We are sorry you didn't enjoy your stay.

A peaceful and relaxing get away. Friendly hosts.

Carrock View camping pod (two person)

Liked: Beautiful location. I stayed in a glamping pod, with my dog. So peaceful and relaxing. Just what I needed. View from our pod was amazing looking out over fields and mountains in distance. Lovely sun sets and sun rises. Each pod was fenced with a big plot of land. Perfect fory dog and I to play
Had campfire every night. Definitely going back for longer next time.

Disliked: Nothing I disliked

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: A reasonably nice setting.

Disliked: I’ll begin by saying this is the first review I’ve ever left for anything, but I felt compelled to do so.
I booked to stay for 4 nights but left after 1, I refuse to stay anywhere that can’t keep their facilities clean.
I’m more than happy to stay at a basic site and like to see farmers diversifying but general cleanliness is the very least any site should provide. There was a cleaning rota on the wall that hadn’t been updated since the beginning of September which tells you all you need to know.
Before I get a response of “Why didn’t you tell us before you left?”, I didn’t see any point. If you cared about the quality of the experience you provided to guests, you’d clean your toilets.
Not bothered if I get a refund or not, I’m more irritated by wasting my time with a 250 mile round trip and would like to help others not make the same mistake. Maybe it’s better maintained in peak season, who knows.

From the manager: Thanks for your review. Your reference to the cleaning rotas leads me to believe that you used the wrong toilets. During the winter months, we shut the main facilities and ask campers to use the pod facilities, which are a 50-meter walk away. You would have been advised of this in your welcome letter. Some campers continue to use the facilities on the main site and we have had an issue with the doors being forced open causing damage. We therefore decided to simply place a sign on the door saying not in use. So this may have been lost in the bad weather we have had.
I am sorry that you had a wasted journey and cut your break short. We could have resolved all this or even if you no longer wanted to stay we could have pointed you in the right direction to other sites or even wild camping spots.

Excellent stay, beautiful views, Friendly hosts.

Local attractions

If you’re keen on history, you could be learning about Carlisle’s in a jiffy – it’s a 15-minute drive from Camping at Cardewlees. The Great Border City also has a castle where Mary Queen of Scots spent a stint behind bars and a cathedral that was founded in 1133. For a flutter on the horses, a racecourse serves the local area too. To go further back in time – think close to 2,000 years – Hadrian’s Wall, the most visited Roman ruin in the whole of Britain, is a 40-minute drive from the site. The Walltown Crags section’s a stellar place to start your journey to a couple of millennia ago: this stretch of the original wall has eye-popping views over the patchwork of fields below. Not tired out after your epic journey along the Cumbria Way? Set off along the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path, which runs from one side of England's coast to the other.
