  • Pop-up wild camping at an equestrian centre in the Eden Valley
  • A 30-minute drive to Ullswater lake, and 45 minutes to Hadrian’s Wall
  • Back-to-basics site, with a pub 200 metres away
Tucked away in the peaceful, rural village of Brampton, Ivy House’s pop-up camping field has views over the Eden Valley in gorgeous Cumbrian countryside. In fact, with only a handful of pitches, it’s so quiet up here that hens and the resident horses may be your only close neighbours. So what about the basics to keep you all comfy and cosy on site? Well, this being wild camping, facilities are pretty minimal, but there’s a loo in the farmyard (bring a torch for nocturnal wanderings) and the grass pitches are level and sheltered by mature trees. No need to worry about the car, either, as there’s secure parking in the farmyard. Just 200 metres away (a couple minutes' walk), the friendly village pub serves good food and beer. The market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland (five minutes' drive or at least half an hour's walk) has got a butchers and bakers if you feel like firing up the barbecue, and there are plenty of pubs to tempt you in if you don’t feel like cooking. And this being Cumbria, there’s a cinema there to cater for any rainy days. When you’ve ready for the off, several hiking and cycling routes can be accessed from the quiet lanes around the site, from a family-friendly trot around Gelt Woods (45 minutes) to more serious striding out in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nice small quiet pop up location.
3x gravel pitches with hookup.
Grass pitch was good, fairly level in places, top of the field was more sloped.
Quiet (earbuds required though, cockerell at 5am!) and lovely surroundings, pub very close.
Toilet was fine, but a short walk over rough cobbles so wouldn't do that during the night (torch also requires). Plenty of hot water to wash up etc.

Disliked: Shame no shower, but at this price it was still a bargain.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We stayed at the camp field at Ivy House Equestrian Centre. Joan the host met us on arrival and we found her to be friendly and helpful. The site facilities as advertised are basic but they are clean and well maintained. The camping field is flat and only big enough for a few tents, which we found ideal. You can also park next to your pitch which made setting up easier.
Our time here was relaxing and the nights were peaceful.
There is also a pub just a couple of minutes walk from the site that serves great food and ale.
We enjoyed our stay here and would visit again.

Disliked: Disliked nothing because when we made our reservation we were aware of the facilities on-site.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Friendly owner, met me when I arrived and showed me round. Lovely clean (proper) toilet with hot water and washing-up room next door, as well as drinking water on tap outside. Very dog-friendly (even when my dog decided to wander into the farmhouse's kitchen!).
The site was lovely, with the horses (and foals) in the field right next to us, so close I could hear them munching the grass. Free-range chickens wandering about and cows in a nearby field, too. The local pub was a 2 minute walk away and they had an acoustic night on the Saturday night when I was there.
Great base for lots of fantastic walks and visiting the pretty villages nearby.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but just be aware that this is a working farm and cows and cockerels like to wake up quite early!
