  • Community-owned pub site a 10-minute walk from Mawbray Banks, Cumbria
  • Lake District National Park a half-hour drive; Carlisle 45 minutes
  • Beer garden with expansive views; toilet block and showers
Fancy adding a little feel-good factor to your camping holiday? By staying at The Lowther Arms, you’ll lend your support to a deserving project, for this traditional country pub in the heart of Mawbray village, in Cumbria, was rescued from closure by the local community, and any income generated by the site is invested back into the pub and its facilities. You too can make like the locals, settling down in a cosy corner for a pint and a meal (if you are planning an evening meal, you'll need to book well in advance as they are full most evenings), or for a morning coffee and a quiet spell during which to plan the day’s activities. The site sits within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there is plenty to do in the vicinity, starting (predictably enough) with the pretty spectacular coastline. The sandy dunes of Mawbray Banks (10 minutes’ walk) are home to protected species like the natterjack toad, plus birds like oystercatchers and curlews. As you walk along this vast stretch, you can also take in views of Scotland across the Solway Firth. Or you can head to Allonby (five minutes’ drive), a shingle beach popular with windsurfers. Hiking trails for all abilities, including a challenging scramble up Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain), await at Lake District National Park, which is less than half an hour’s drive away – indeed, on a clear day you can admire its hills from the beer garden. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the site, and campfires are allowed. In addition to the pub toilets, guests also have access to a toilet block and showers.

Liked: Lovely little site in a great, quiet location. Staff at the pub were really friendly. Good play park for kids just across the road from the site. Lots to do in the surrounding areas. Site and facilities are well maintained and clean.

Disliked: If the site was busy there is only one shower.

Camping pod

Liked: I was with my 8 year old daughter. The site is really quiet. the pod is great - very well set up and well appointed. The play park is just across the lane and the toilet facilities are fine for the small number of people there. There was only a couple in a campervan that night. A big supply of logs provided so I only needed to gather some kindling and a firelighters so Thalia loved having a fire and melting marshmallows! The previous week at another site, I had to buy the logs! Lots of power sockets so charging devices is no issue and although it didn't rain, the shelter at the front of the pod would have been great for keeping dry when cooking if it had been wet. Staff were very welcoming and pleased to see us.

Disliked: No dislikes as such - a brush and dustpan would have been handy to sweep the floor though.

Camping pod

Liked: Lovely arm welcome. Pod had underfloor heating! toasty! relaxed / quiet environment. Comfy bed. Good food at the Lowther arms.
Son and I enjoyed hunting for some local / regional geocaches. We also had a session at Cubria Moto Park - indoor electric mx bikes. Good location to get to coastline.

Disliked: Really dont need to write anything in here. :-)

Camping pod

Liked: Pod was great. Heating was really good (too good almost) for this time of year. Very clean. Pub was lovely. Food delicious, kids menu was fab, even got clean plates from Miss Fussy.

Disliked: Not a lot to do in the area. Even when venturing out there seems to be very little to do. Maybe the wrong time of year for this place(?)
Only one toilet/shower. Not an issue this time because we were the only people there, but summer time that could be annoying.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your kind comments. We truly hope you had a wonderful time.
The area surrounding us is very rural and quiet and something most of our customers love. We will always try and suggest places to visit in the area too if your looking for something more exciting to do.
So pleased you enjoyed the food you had with us as we do pride ourselves with our food and hospitality.
We do have a second toilet on site too which is on your welcome letter explaining where it is, just if you do decide to visit us again in the future.
Again, thank you for your kind words as getting great feedback from happy customers is what we strive for.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: We were greeted and checked in really efficiently by Ben, and the campsite was ideal. Beautiful pitch with EHU, right behind the Lowther Arms. Toilet and shower were immaculate. We ate in the pub, and the food was gorgeous, with generous portions. Our waitress and Ben made us feel so at home. Busy little pub in the middle of a lovely village. Would definitely recommend both the campsite and the pub

Local attractions

Senhouse Roman Museum (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to learn more about the Roman history of this area. The collection of artefacts on display here includes votive slabs, military altars and pottery unearthed at a nearby Roman fort said to date from the first century AD. If you have an animal lover in your party, why not make them happy with a trip to Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour)? In addition to displays starring the resident birds of prey, you can get up close and personal to lemurs and meerkats, or stroll with an alpaca. All these experiences are accompanied by spectacular, far-reaching views of Bassenthwaite Lake. The border city of Carlisle (45 minutes) is worth a visit for its 11th-century castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in the 1500s, and its medieval cathedral, with an elegant Flemish altarpiece. You can also go for a pleasant stroll through Bitts Park or on Hadrian's Wall Path, along the River Eden.
