Chosen Cheshire? Then also choose a cheery welcome from the good folks at Pitch and Canvas. This family-run site is a mile from Tattenhall and around a 25-minute drive from the centre of Chester. Pitch and Canvas is in an area of low light pollution, making for some great stargazing at night. The meadow also gets some spectacular sunsets and has views over Cheshire's unmistakable Sandstone Ridge. It’s a 25-minute amble to the local village, where there are pubs and eateries. There’s a small supermarket 15 minutes’ drive away, but for a truly fab brekkie, the local cafés serve excellent breakfasts. The site’s toilet block houses its clean, modern facilities in a snug wooden hut – sinks, showers (including one with a family room to make it easier with children) and toilets all a very short stroll from your pitch.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, friendly, and peaceful campsite with spacious pitches and excellent facilities, including hot showers and clean toilets. Many visitors praised the helpful and welcoming staff, as well as the convenient on-site shop. The location is ideal for exploring the surrounding countryside and local attractions. While most stays were positive, a few guests mentioned issues with noise from large groups or road proximity, and some found certain facilities could be improved. Overall, visitors highly recommend the site and many plan to return.

Oak camping pod (deluxe)

Liked We're only 30 minutes away in North Wales, so we’re familiar with the area—and it never disappoints. Tattenhall, Beeston, and the surrounding countryside are absolutely beautiful. The village is incredibly dog-friendly, which made it perfect for a family trip including our pooch. We had a great time exploring Beeston Castle with the kids before heading back to the campsite and taking a scenic 30-minute walk into Tattenhall.

On our way, we passed three main pubs in the village: The Sportsmans Arms, The Letters Inn, and The Bear. All had their charm, but The Bear stood out by far. It’s a lovely dog-friendly pub/restaurant/hotel with fantastic food and truly welcoming staff—we had an absolutely brilliant meal there.

The other two pubs were okay, but with some limitations: The Sportsmans Arms wasn’t serving food on the Saturday we visited, and The Letters Inn only offered Chinese food. While that’s great for my wife and me, it wasn’t ideal for the kids. Also, dogs aren’t allowed in their main restaurant area.

In the end, we were more than happy to have discovered The Bear—definitely the best spot in the village for a meal with the whole family, dog included!

In terms of the actual campsite, we stayed in the Oak Lodge. The facilities were good - clean toilets and shower room, a place to wash up and a tap for drinking water right next to our lodge. Unfortunately, this is where the positives ended.....

Disliked Where to begin...
Unfortunately, as the saying goes, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” We arrived at around 2:50pm and made our way to the reception area, only to find it completely unmanned. I asked a nearby group if we were in the right place, and a woman responded that she worked there but was currently helping other guests—which is fair enough.

However, once she handed me the key, that was it. There was no information provided—no directions to our lodge, no explanation of where the facilities were, no mention of check-out time, nothing at all. She simply handed over the key and disappeared. Thankfully, I had already looked at the site map beforehand, but a friendly welcome and a bit of guidance would have gone a long way.

When we arrived at the lodge, it was immediately clear that it was in desperate need of maintenance. The exterior paint was peeling all over, and part of the wood near the roof was visibly lifting away.

Worst of all was the sheer number of flies and wasps. I completely understand that insects are part of being outdoors, but this was excessive. It genuinely seemed like there was a wasp nest nearby—possibly beneath the lodge—as they were constantly swarming from underneath.

Inside, the fly problem was even worse. At times, it looked like the floor was moving due to how many there were. A simple net or fly screen over the doors and windows could have made a massive difference. The wasps were so bad we couldn’t even sit outside until later in the evening, and even citronella candles had no effect. Within an hour of arriving, I was seriously considering leaving. If it weren’t for the kids and how disappointed they would have been, I likely would have returned the key and gone home.

While the wasps calmed down later in the day, the flies remained constant throughout our stay. Strangely, they seemed to be drawn to the carpet, and nothing we tried reduced their numbers.

To make matters worse, the reception was closed all day on Saturday. There was nowhere to pick up essentials or even ask basic questions. The website also advertised a food van being on site during peak summer periods but there was absolutely nothing there. My wife emailed the contact listed for Pitch & Canvas on Saturday regarding the food situation, and as of now, she’s still waiting for a reply.

One final thing to note—while not a deal-breaker for us, it may be for others: there’s no Wi-Fi, and mobile signal was practically non-existent. My wife and I are on different networks, and neither of us could even load Google Maps during our stay.

The location, as we already knew, is lovely and the surrounding area has a lot to offer. But unfortunately, the stay itself was very disappointing—especially for nearly £200. It’s a real shame, but we won’t be returning.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely pitch with some nice walks local and easy access to Chester, relaxed vibe across the site, music, fire pits, all allowed and very dog inclusive (not just dog friendly)

Disliked The facilities were relatively clean but could be improved and would be good if there was a shelf for toiletry bags ect. The cockerel in the morning was also excellent at keeping us up from dawn (on electric tent pitches (EP)

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The whole site was brilliant. We were there for our annual family camping weekend and we loved it. Lovely welcome on arrival. They were happy to accommodate us all together as we were tents and a camper with electric hookup req with no problem at all. Site was immaculate and plenty of room for children to play cricket football etc. At 1 point 3 different groups were playing separately and still loads of room. Fab relaxed feel and 10.30 quiet time worked brilliantly. Perfect family site thankyou.

Local attractions

If one ever needed a good reason to go out for a country walk, it’s present here in the shape of The Ice Cream Farm, the biggest ice cream-themed adventure park in the world and a half-hour walk away. Hikers should make a beeline for the Sandstone Trail, a 34-mile route starting around a 10-minute drive from the site. You needn’t walk the entire length; pick up a booklet locally for info on shorter sections that take in views of castles, fields and hills before depositing you for a well-earned drink at a pub. If you’d prefer to explore on horseback, there’s a riding centre 10 minutes’ walk from the site that can organise treks for all abilities. For a spot of history, take a trip to one of the nearby castles, such as Beeston Castle (10 minutes), a medieval structure set on top of a cliff, surrounded by a 40-acre woodland park and with some far-reaching views on clear days. Gothic beauty Cholmondley Castle is a little further away at 15 minutes and has nature trails, play areas and a farm shop as well as some gorgeous gardens to wander around.
