  • Biker-friendly site on a hill overlooking the Cheshire countryside
  • Five miles from the Peak District and 35 minutes’ drive from Buxton
  • 10-foot firepit on site; barbecues are permitted
High time for a ride to the Cheshire countryside? Then make your way to Avona Escapes, an adults-only, biker-friendly site with just fab views over the countryside. It’s owned by Shez and Graham, two bikers who have been riding for over 20 years. Avona Escapes is a very secure site with full CCTV coverage, so your pride and joys will be safe and sound. It’s a rural area with next to no neighbours, at the top of a hill with views down over the countryside. Alpacas, peacocks, ducks and chickens roam free all over, so don’t be surprised if they pay you a visit sometimes. Shez and Graham have put together a chilled and secure biking stay here. There are modern shower and toilet facilities, as well as a 10-foot firepit for guests to gather around. They allow barbecues, and only ask that you place them on the paving slabs provided. Items for sale on site include a big bag of logs, charcoal or kindling and firelighters. The edge of the Peak District National Park is just five miles away from the site, with Matlock Bath an hour’s drive away and Buxton 35 minutes’ drive away. The Cat and Fiddle Inn, a Peak District distillery in a 17th-century building running tours and tastings, is 25 minutes’ drive away. As you should expect from a place so close to the Peak District, the roads around these parts are just awesome to ride around. If you need anything to snack on, just stop by the many supermarkets on the outskirts of Congleton around 10 minutes’ ride away. Groups are welcome at Avona Escapes, and those with over 10 people can ask the site (before their arrival) for an evening meal after a long day of hiking or riding, with food such as barbecued goods, homemade pizzas, curry, chilli con carne or toasties for a set price per person.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Absolutely beautiful place, booked at short notice as the sun was shining. Had no idea that wilde alpacas and peacocks just run free on the camping grounds. After a walk round the site the following morning we noticed meerkats and even wallabies were being raised there, unfortunately not running wild but a nice treat none the less. Lots of local walks with amazing views to end what was a really nice break. Would highly recommend this place to Absolutely anyone. Loved it.

Disliked: Composting toilets was something to get used to but much better for environment, water pressure was on the weaker side but can’t complain really!

Met Graham on arrival who was lovely, very informative and helpful.

Site has composting toilets, and electric hot showers.

The location would be an ideal base for walkers, or for those just looking for a little break away from the day-to-day.
Noted that there were well positioned glamping pods.

Llamas and chickens run loose - unfortunately the weather meant they were staying close to their homes, but all the same it was nice to see and hear them.

Route directions

If you follow Satnav direction, it will bring you to a small layby with three large rocks and a sign for Avona. This is the bottom of the drive. Continue to the top of the drive and then around the back of the house. Continue through the large gate in front of you to the camping field, find a space and pitch up. Keep an eye out for wet ground near the pond if it has been raining. The owners will greet you when you arrive, or if they aren’t there, they’ll visit at some point.
