Waterfront Country Park, in the South Yorkshire countryside, is a place that really lives up to its name – this seven-acre park on the edge of West Stockwith is surrounded on all sides by water in the form of the River Trent, the River Idle and the Chesterfield Canal. All of that means some lovely watery views, and some interesting wildlife to look out for (especially along the Mother Drain, which is a protected site because of rare dragonflies breeding there). It also means plenty of opportunities for fishing, either in the river or in one of the local lakes. Another real bonus of this setting is a choice of not one but two waterside pubs within easy walking distance – one is about a minute away, and the other about five minutes. And if that wasn’t enough, the yacht club at the next-door marina welcomes guests. Walk in the other direction and you'll get to the village of Misterton in around 20 minutes for yet another pub, a good-quality local butcher, a small supermarket and a couple of takeaways. For more meal options, the towns of Gainsborough (15 minutes’ drive), Bawtry (20 minutes) and Retford (25 minutes) all have some good places to go. Working up an appetite for all these food and drink options should be pretty easy – it might involve days of walking, cycling, golf or visiting the area's various family-friendly attractions such as the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Sundown Adventureland. Facilities on site are simple but well-thought-out, including a smart modern toilet block with underfloor heating, solar panels and an eco-friendly biomass boiler.
