Campsite view

  • Spectacular views in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • A five-min drive from Derwent Reservoir; 30 from Durham and Newcastle
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; pub and restaurant right next door
No need to go far to conjure up magical views from Northumberland’s Bolbec Manor Campsite: it overlooks Muggleswick Moor and is on the north-eastern edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a wildlife and walking haven making up the second biggest AONB in the country. As you’d expect, outdoor adventuring is all around here, from moorland hikes over the North Pennines and further west around the Yorkshire Dales National Park, to roaming the paths of Muggleswick woods to the south. The Derwent Reservoir, one of England’s biggest inland waterways, is five minutes’ drive away for sailing, windsurfing and lakeside cycling; fishing and golf are close by, and city days are easily sorted at Durham and Newcastle, each 30 minutes’ drive away. Bolbec Manor has toilets, shower facilities, a washing-up area and chemical disposal. Barbecues and campfires are allowed; the nearest shops are at Shotley Bridge five minutes’ drive away and Consett within 10. As a peaceful site, no loud music is allowed (the soundtrack here will be provided by the hens that scratch about on site). Please note that tents staying for three nights or more should be relocated after the third night.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Such a lovely welcome from the owners, making sure we new where all the facilities were. We liked the individual hard standing pitch (no.2) which included a water point and grey water disposal. It's very handy for the pub next door for meals and drinks

A great overnight stopover which suited us perfectly whilst en route.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or motorhome pitch (large)

Liked Views are incredible, spacious pitches, well divided, natural look. Good value for a non electric hard standing pitch. Good hot showers (maybe a bit too hot!) although the utility block looks a little unfinished and the showers need a bit more ventilation to keep it comfortable. Although we didn't use it, having a pub next door could be a real bonus. Lovely walk down to the reservoir, (hard working coming back up via the road if you choose to make it a circular walk!).

Disliked Slightly scruffy first impression when entering the site (owners appear to be renovating their house maybe?).

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Very friendly welcome by owner and loved being able to choose our own pitch. Site was nicely laid out with privacy hedges between pitches and were nice and spacious with EHU and grey waste on pitch. Water points easily located around the site. Whilst a few reviews criticise the toilet/shower facilities for not being finished off, personally I felt they were absolutely fine - dry, clean and with plenty of hot water which is all I tend to look for on a site. Washing up area had liquid and bowl provided if needed and was under cover. Easily walkable to the Derwent Reservoir but plenty of cheap car parks if you choose to drive there (about 5 mins away). Especially loved the fluffy chickens who lived next to pitch 4 - so cute!

Disliked Not a dislike but it was a little confusing to locate the entrance as we didn't realise you had to drive into the pub car park to access the site.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or motorhome pitch (large)

Liked Very quiet, got given a choice of many pitches, good shower and toilet facilities. huge pitches.

Disliked Toilet blocks could do with a bit of sprucing up, bare plaster board walls looked a bit scruffy but facilities were still good and showers were hot.

Electric grass and gravel tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked The views were stunning. The pitches were big enough and it was secluded enough. The shower block was clean and modern and not too far from the pitches. The owner was lovely and really friendly.

Disliked The pitch when we arrived had dog poo on we had to move that there was a mole hole on the pitch which we had to work around pegging our tent. On the pitches it wasn’t all flat and we were on a bit of a dip. There is a main road and can be nosey at night

Local attractions

An easy – and recommended – first stopoff is Derwent Reservoir, in a handsome setting a few miles from Bolbec Manor. Take a hike (or stroll) on the well-maintained paths to Pow Hill Country Park on the south shore or Millshield picnic area on the north, or take the longer bike route around the reservoir covering some local roads as well. Drop into the visitor centre for info, the key to the bird hide on Derwent’s western edge, or a fishing permit: Derwent is a popular pick for Co Durham trout fishing. Around the North Pennines AONB, it’s well worth the 45-minute drive to Ninebanks near Hexham to access Isaac’s Tea Trail, a circular 37-mile route from there to Alston via Allendale and Nenthead. The same distance to the south and also well worth the drive is the famed waterfall of High Force, where the entire River Tees plunges 21 feet over a cliff; get to the waterfall via the Pennine Way stretch crossing the Moor House Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve. Also to the south, the market town of Bishop Auckland is home to Auckland Castle and its 800 acres of parkland, and to Binchester Roman Fort (this is Hadrian’s Wall land), a Roman fortress on the banks of the River Wear. Somewhat more modern history is at Durham and its must-see stunning cathedral.
