  • Traditional shepherd's huts with woodburning stove and shared kitchen
Bear down on beaches, castles and seaside villages from Lucker Mill House, a quiet adults-only glamping site in Northumberland. This splendid place is just 10 minutes’ drive from Bamburgh and its iconic castle and a quarter of an hour from the sweet seaside village of Seahouses, where you can catch boats to the Farne Islands. These traditional-style huts were built by the owner, so they blend in seamlessly with their green surroundings. The accommodation is fringed by fir trees and has views over open countryside, with further attractive scenery available a short walk away in the well-tended on-site garden – head here to take a stroll around the lawn or to lounge in the summerhouse. Inside, it’s just as cosy. The huts have a comfy double bed and a woodburning stove, plus free logs that should keep you going for two nights. Each unit also has access to a firepit with outdoor furniture and a barbecue… feast time? Continental breakfast can be provided for an additional fee (just add it as an extra when you book). For self-catering, a utility room is on hand with a kettle, microwave, fridge, washing machine and drying rack. There are also plug sockets here where you can charge laptops or mobiles, plus separate toilets and hot water showers. For those days when you don't fancy cooking, there's also a gastropub a few hundred metres away in the centre of the small village of Lucker.

Fisherman's Hut shepherd's hut (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: We stayed one of the Shepherds hut with on its shower and toilet. The hut is very cosy and wood burn kept us very warm. Laura & Kerwin are very friendly. We enjoyed our stay and our dog loved it too. It is a very peaceful and beautiful village and only short drive from Bamburgh castle and Holy Island. Lots of beautiful walks. The village has a pub which is 2 minutes walk from the hut and the food is delicious.

Shepherd's hut (no electricity, no pets)

Liked: Perfect little get away from it all cabin. We really enjoyed our few days here, cabin had all we needed and was cosy with the wee log burner. Nice and clean toilet / kitchen block and nice bbq area we will definitely return!

Disliked: Would have been nice for a fence to section our cabin off for the purpose of being able to let the dog off lead and not worry about him wandering

Local attractions

Keen on castles or beaches? Bamburgh’s got both (10 minutes’ drive) and that means crazy castle views, sand dunes and boat trips to the Farne Islands to catch sight of puffins, seals and other passing sea creatures. Boat trips are the bread and butter of Seahouses (15 minutes) too and they go to the same place, so you’ll have your choice of where to depart from. For another outing all about nature, there’s Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve (20 minutes) or The Alnwick Garden (20 minutes) for that – the second has a grand cascade and treehouse restaurant too. Game for some golfing glory? Close by, Alnmouth Golf Club (25 minutes) will help you sharpen up your skills. Or you could take a fast train from Berwick-upon-Tweed (30 minutes) to the so-called ‘home of golf’. Newcastle upon Tyne (an hour) is another city within driving distance of the site, where there are many places to spend an afternoon, from the historic quayside to theatres and tracing Hadrian’s Wall from the city centre.
